Crossed by the winding meanders of the Isle, Savignac-les-Églises is located in the Dordogne department, in the New-Aquitaine region. In the heart of the Isle valley, between two limestone plateaus of the Causse du Périgord Blanc, the origins of the village go back a long way, as evidenced by the remains found bearing witness to the Roman occupation of its lands, around the 1st century AD. A dynamic town, which once lived mainly from the cultivation of vines thanks to the production of Sorgue wine, saw its traffic increase at the end of the 19th century thanks to the passage of the tramway linking Périgueux to Lanouailles, which was replaced by buses in 1950.

While staying in Savignac-les-Églises, it is for sure the beauty of its heritage that will jump out at you. On the built side, the town has a whole host of monuments to discover, such as its Saint-Christophe chapel housed in the heart of a former cemetery now transformed into a park, or the 17th century Peytelie chapel and the Saint-Martin church, which is worth a look for the beauty of the paintings in its choir and its bell tower. Strolling through the village and through the Bras Morts park known for its rich flora and fauna, you will not fail to cross the road of mills, 4 in number, most of which date from the 6th century. Cluzeaux and other stone huts also dot the landscape, bearing witness to its ancient occupation, and historic dwellings that you can discover thanks to two hiking trails that start from the church square. The river is also of great importance in the history of the village, as ruins of Gallic dwellings have been found along its banks, banks that are particularly suitable for hiking through the two causses that run along the river.

Whether you are on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike, there are many marked itineraries in the Savignac-les-Églises area that will allow you to discover all the beauty of the preserved natural heritage of the Périgord Blanc. Nordic walking trails of 6, 7 and 9 kilometres are particularly popular with sports enthusiasts, as are the 2.7 kilometre health trail, the Randoland loop (family) and the 5.8 kilometre mountain bike trail through the woods. Périgueux, 20 kilometres west of Savignac-les-Églises, is a must to do during your stay. The capital of the Dordogne, Périgueux marvels at the beauty of its Saint-Front cathedral, its Brantôme abbey founded by Charlemagne, its gastronomy and its banks of the Isle where lovers of water sports, walking and fishing can meet. There are also many castles that have flourished in the region over the centuries, castles located less than 40 kilometres from Savignac-les-Églises, which you can easily visit for a cultural interlude with your family. The Château d'Excideuil, the Château d'Esciore, the castles of Lieu-Dieu and Barrière, the Château de Saint-Vincent, the magnificent site of Les Bories, the medieval fortress of Bourdeilles without forgetting the Château de Jumilhac and its splendid gardens will complete your visit in the Périgord!
