With Mont Ventoux as a backdrop, this neighbouring town of Vaison-la-Romaine is set in a particularly green environment, in the Baronnies Provençales Regional Nature Park. 21 kilometres from Nyons, 30 kilometres from Carpentras and about fifty minutes from Avignon, this town in the Ouvèze valley offers incredible panoramas of the first foothills of the Alps to the north and the plain of the Vaucluse to the south. Mollans-sur-Ouvèze is a fortified town that was the border between the Dauphiné and the Comtat Venaissin, and is home to a splendid heritage that you must absolutely discover. To begin, head for the lower town: along its medieval streets that smell of lavender and lime trees, you will discover the medieval bridge that with its unique arch spans the river that wets the town from one end to the other. If it was once flanked by an entire defensive arsenal, today only a tower, called the Clock Tower, remains, topped by a belfry since the 18th century. After taking the time to stroll through the olive groves and vineyards, take a tour of the historic heart of Mollans-sur-Ouvèze to discover its magnificent fountain at the Dauphin, its chapel of Our Lady of Compassion corbelled over the river, its covered wash house with seven arcades and its two imposing towers classified as Historic Monuments, towards the upper town. Here, the alleys become even narrower, lined with old houses that intrigue and invite you to give free rein to your imagination, particularly thanks to their ribbons of perched gardens, sometimes poetic, sometimes wild. At the very top of the village stands proudly a very old fortified castle, of which only the lower part and some defences now remain. Built during the 12th century, it is now privately owned but you can easily admire its half-medieval, half-Renaissance architecture from the town. After enjoying the view from the top of the hill, you can go to the church of Saint-Marcel, which is worth a visit for the splendour of its flamboyant baroque decorations and furniture.
