Like lost in the middle of lagoons and marshes, the citadel of Aigues-Mortes, 5 kilometres from the sea, surprises as much by the beauty of its landscapes of Provence as by its imposing medieval heritage.

Aigues-Mortes, an ancient fishing and saline hamlet, nestling at the bottom of a marshy gulf, was the first port on the Mediterranean of the kingdom of France in the 13th century. Right in the middle of the magnificent Camargue Gardoise, this medieval town built by Saint-Louis is as surprising as it is fascinating. Surrounded by impressive ramparts decorated with 5 towers and 10 superb gates, Aigues-Mortes is incontestably marked by the seal of history : crusades, Templars and religious wars have made the city a city with a tumultuous past, whose testimonies you will be able to detect during your strolls. To begin your visit, walk around the ramparts to enjoy an overview of the city and discover the various towers that make its reputation. 30 metres high, the Constance Tower is the highest and most popular in Aigues-Mortes : visit the Knights Hall, then take its spiral staircase and climb up to the terrace of this former prison to enjoy an incomparable view of the city, the Camargue moors, the Mediterranean and Mont Ventoux. After this visit, take the Grande Rue to join the Eglise des Sablons. This Gothic church built in the 13th century and its two baroque chapels bring freshness and calm to visitors who cross the threshold. If the exterior of this church does not look like much, its interior nicely decorated with superb stained glass windows is worth a visit. After these peregrinations, the Place Saint-Louis, its fountain, statue and restaurants on the terrace will be a perfect setting for a refreshing break

Impossible to visit Aigues-Mortes without going through its saltworks. Whether on a small train, on foot or by mountain bike, we guarantee that the visit is really worth it. You will discover the tricks of the saunier's work, the history of salt, its formation and culture by walking from pool to pool in salt tables, to finish your visit to the crystalloirs where the fleur de sel is harvested by hand. Coloured with a sumptuous shade of pink, the saltworks create a singular atmosphere, like magic at sunrise and sunset, when the sky is tinged with a warm light that is reflected in the sparkling basins. During the day, stroll through the pools, ponds and camels, these small "mountains" of immaculate white salt so specific to the panoramas of Aigues-Mortes. In all, more than 40 kilometres of marked trails through the most beautiful sites of the commune will allow you to discover the fauna and flora of the Camargue.

And why not opt for a boat cruise to discover the rich biodiversity of the Camargue Gardoise ? Imagine the scene : on the banks of the Vidourle and the ponds of Aigues-Mortes, the manadiers climbed on their horses sort the bulls, while the pink flamingos cohabit in harmony with the migratory birds that fly over the fields, the rice fields and the Camargue marshes... Here is the perfect postcard of your holidays ! Horse, pony or carriage rides are also an excellent way to discover the wonders of Aigues-Mortes and the Camargue in complete freedom. Meet the winegrowers who make Aigues-Mortes the capital of sand wine : through the vineyards surrounded by lagoons, dunes, reed beds and pines, the exceptional landscapes follow one another but are not alike. Wine lovers will not fail to taste the local productions in a friendly atmosphere !

For the irrepressible desire to dive into the water, head for the Grau du Roi just 5 minutes from downtown Aigues-Mortes : you can enjoy its long beaches of fine sand for afternoons of idleness or swimming, and you can also enjoy a wide range of nautical activities by the sea : windsurfing, catamaran, kayaking, water hiking, water skiing or wakeboarding will rhythm your afternoons.

Surrounded by ponds as far as the Mediterranean, Aigues-Mortes is the ideal place for discovery, strolls, but also to feast thanks to its very rich gastronomy : and the specialities are numerous within the walls! Sand wines, aïoli, anchoïade, octopus rust, bull meat with fleur de sel, asparagus, Camargue rice, shellfish platters, oysters, wild fish and sugar fougasse will punctuate your meals during your stay under the acute-Mortais sun.
