The small village of Bessèges is located in the Gard region, on the border with the Ardèche. 30 kilometers north of Alès, and 80 kilometers from Nice, Bessèges, watered from side to side by the refreshing meanders of the Cèze, is a real little corner of paradise for those who love green holidays. In the Cévennes National Park, Bessèges reached its peak in the 19th century thanks to the development of the Cévennes mining industry, which supplied coal to many villages in the region. Spread out between 146 and 492 meters of altitude, the village calls out by the beauty of its heritage. As you stroll through its streets, you can appreciate the splendour of its architecture, typical of the region, and its church: built in the 19th century, the church of Notre-Dame is worth a visit for its listed organ from the second half of the 19th century, as well as for its unique character. Indeed, it is one of the few churches in France to display on its pediment the motto "Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité". Not far from it, you can discover the ruins of the watchtower of Castillon of the 13th century, but also the old convent of the Clarisses sisters, the old mill of the 17th century, or the Romanesque church of Foussignargues of the 19th century. In addition to these visits, the Château de La Marchande (17th century), the Château du Castellas recognizable by its square tower of the 12th century, or the Château du Grand Vialas, an imposing hunting lodge of the 13th century.

Dynamic, Bessèges is also known for the many events it organizes throughout the year, and there is something for everyone! In addition to its traditional weekly market on Thursday mornings, the village organizes a Christmas market, bicycle races, a video game fair in March, the "Gard à la Bière" festival in May, concerts, but also a photography festival, music festivals, sculpture festivals, its famous corso, and festivals celebrating local gastronomy.

But Bessèges is above all a real pleasure for outdoor sports lovers. Hiking, whether on foot or by bike, is certainly the most popular activity. Our advice? Head for the Bessèges forest to discover its colony of Salzmann pines (one of the 7 sites in France), or the high valleys of the Cèze, which you can reach thanks to the many marked routes through the Cévennes National Park. White water sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the clear waters of the Cèze for a canoe or kayak trip, a fishing trip or a swimming break at the Plan d'eau de la Plaine, in crystal clear water to die for!
