Developed from the middle of the 18th century, Pointe-à-Pitre, City of Art and History, is a dynamic and cultural destination, which has retained its colonial charm. Joint between Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre, in the heart of Guadeloupe, this economic capital is full of typical streets with an incomparable charm, where museums, small restaurants and markets with bright colors and flavors are always present. What to see? The Darse market, which animates Pointe-à-Pitre from Monday to Saturday every morning, and which is full of fresh fish, exotic fruits and vegetables. Another market, the central market, which you can reach by taking Saint-John Perse street, will be perfect for a dive into the heart of Creole gastronomy: here, spices, punches, exotic jams and traditional Creole dishes are legion on the stalls and will delight your eyes as much as your taste buds!

But the other must-see in Pointe-à-Pitre is the Place de la Victoire: a huge square studded with royal palms, it bears the history of the city and owes its name to the triumph of the sans-culottes at the end of slavery. You will discover the tourist office housed in a neo-classical colonial style building, the statues of governors Félix Éboué and Charles Victor Frébault, as well as a superb bandstand dating from 1930. A few steps away, the Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul church, classified as a Historic Monument, is really worth a visit: with its beautiful facade, painted in yellow and white, it also impresses with its metal frame and its 19th century Carrara marble altar. Moreover, every morning on the church square, a magnificent market with exotic flowers is held, which will dazzle young and old alike.

Fancy a cultural interlude? The Schoelcher Museum and the Saint-John Perse Museum will be perfect to discover the local culture, the first one housing an exhibition of the Pontoonian poet Alexis Leger, as well as an exhibition of Creole costumes, the second one revealing objects that belonged to Victor Schoelcher, defender of human rights and of the abolition of slavery.

And for a stroll on the sea side, head for La Marina! On the road to Gosier, this busy place is full of people, with its moored boats, its restaurants, its bars and its clubs, it is the beating heart of the nightlife in Pointe-à-Pitre! Our advice? Don't miss the beach of Gosier! Located in front of the islet of the same name, it is appreciated because it is sheltered from the wind, and is the perfect place for a lazy session under the sun, or to observe colonies of pelicans. La Caravelle beach, on the other hand, is known to be one of the most beautiful beaches of the island, and is therefore more frequented. Privileged for diving, jet-skiing or kayaking, it is a must for those who spend their vacations in Pointe-à-Pitre!
