The village of Monastier-sur-Gazeille is located in the Haute-Loire department. In the heart of a hilly environment, Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille spreads out between 752 and 1283 meters of altitude, overhanging the valley of the Gazeille, one of the tributaries of the Loire. Located on a route linking the Massif Central to the Rhône Valley and the Midi, this charming town is dominated by the Mézenc, the proud summit of a vast group of phonolithic volcanoes. A medieval town of character, Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille has kept many traces of its rich past, which you can discover by taking the time to lose yourself in its ancient streets. What to see? Its magnificent 11th century abbey church, a true jewel of Auvergne Romanesque art, which is worth a visit for its treasure and its 1518 organ. The other must-see is the castle of Monastier-sur-Gazeille, an imposing 14th century castle made of basalt stones, and flanked by 4 splendid circular towers that plunge you in an instant into the heart of the village's history.
