On the right bank of the Allier, which runs right through the town, Saint-Ilpize is one of those destinations that make an impression. With its absolutely magnificent heritage, its nature as far as the eye can see and its incomparable charm, Saint-Ilpize is the perfect place to set your sights on, for those who dream of an authentic holiday far from the crowd.

The village of Saint-Ilpize is located in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Between Lavoûte-Chilhac and Vieille Brioude, Saint-Ilpize, in the Allier Valley, stands high up on its volcanic peak nestled 150 metres above the Allier. Even before you arrive in the village, you will be guided by its castle, which will show you the way to its belvedere; a belvedere from which the panoramic views of the village of Saint-Ilpize and the Haut Allier valley are breathtaking! A medieval building dating from the 11th century, the castle of Saint-Ilpize was for several decades the residence of the Dauphins of Auvergne. Surrounded by several rows of walls, this building, which is now largely in ruins, still has a chapel at its heart, which has lost none of its splendour. A true jewel of Romanesque architecture, built of volcanic stone, it has a magnificent bell tower with arches that will not fail to amaze lovers of old stones.

Appreciated for its mild climate, the quiet village of Saint-Ilpize benefits from more than 2200 hours of sunshine a year, almost as much as on the French Riviera. A paradise for those who love the great outdoors, the village, spared from mass tourism and the boom in modern construction, offers its visitors a few moments suspended in time. After visiting the castle and its chapel, you can opt for a walk through the village to discover its magnificent built heritage, from its Romanesque church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine (11th century) to its Maison des Artisans, via the Botanical Museum and the suspension bridge over the Allier, which will enable you to reach the left bank of the river and the neighbouring village of Villeneuve-d'Allier. If some annual celebrations punctuate life in Saint-Ilpize, such as its traditional Grape Harvest Festival and its summer concerts in the church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, the main activity here is certainly walking. Many itineraries will allow you to discover the valleys crossed by the Allier, in the direction of Domeyrat and its sublime castle, Brioude, Cissac and Chazieux (by the circuit "Aux Portes du Château" starting from the town hall of Saint-Ilpize), via the GR470 or even in the direction of the lake of Champagnac-le-Vieux located 30 kilometers to the north. Horse riding, canoeing or kayaking on routes ranging from 5 to 32 kilometres, fishing, mountain biking and picnics by the water will complete this stay in Saint-Ilpize.
