Perched at 1500 meters above sea level in the heart of the Hautes-Alpes, the peaceful commune of Le Monêtier-les-Bains is a gateway to the Parc National des Ecrins, named after the Occitan monestier (In French "monastery"), in reference to the place of refuge that welcomed the pilgrims in the 9th century, and "Les Bains" evokes the numerous hot springs that allowed to develop hydrotherapy since Roman times. In the 16th century, the town is experiencing significant mining activity, notably thanks to the Chardonnet graphite mine, now a popular site for hikers.
In the 20th century, the Monêtier-les-Bains renewed with a great tradition unfortunately lost in the course of centuries : the thermal baths. Its hot springs which naturally flow at 40° C have made it possible to open the Grands Bains, a paradise of well-being. It is composed of several spaces of relaxation. Ideal for families, the Grands Bains area contains outdoor and indoor pools as well as the famous Roman trilogy made up of three rooms with different temperatures. The Zen corner par excellence is located in the Romano-Irish area. For adults only, there is a sauna, hammam and a relaxing lounge where you can relax and unwind at any time. The hotel also offers access to a quality beauty institute and a restaurant-bar with views of the Ecrins Massif.
What also makes Monêtier-les-Bains famous is its exceptional pistes ! Located on the Serre Chevalier ski area, the resort enjoys privileged access to 250 kilometers of marked trails. For the most experienced skiers as for the beginners, the domain of Monêtier counts several renowned descents that will fill the desires of freedom. The village has the most favorable territory for off-piste skiing in Serre-Chevalier thanks to its nature left wild. If the mountain flora and fauna attracts you, do not hesitate to go on snowshoeing to know all the secrets of this enchanting nature. Accompanied by a mountain guide, you will discover the beauty of the Ecrins National Park, in which a discrete vegetation borders chamois and ibexes.
Looking for new sensations ? Come and try the snowkite in Serre-Chevalier ! Cousin of the kitesurf, this sport of (new) sliding consists of a descent in ski or snowboard pulled by a kite.
