Ideally located at the gateway to the Pyrenees, Lourdes is the second most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world, just after Rome. Nestled on the banks of the Gave de Pau, the Sanctuary of Lourdes is a must for your visit, whether you are a pilgrim, a history buff or a curious visitor. Every day, you can attend a Eucharistic procession, take a bath in the waters from the Grotto of Apparitions, and visit the latter: well known for its spring, its statue of Our Lady of Lourdes and its rock, this Grotto is a very popular place of prayer among pilgrims, which received the visit of Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI. Do not miss the neo-Byzantine basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary: the most famous basilica in Lourdes, it is in the latter that the Rosary, a popular prayer, is recited every day. The Basilica of Saint Pius X is also worth a visit, for its originality and its very modern aspect: built during the 20th century, this underground building is indeed very contemporary and will surprise many visitors when they visit the religious city.
The castle and its Pyrenean museum are among the must-see attractions during your visit to Lourdes: with its thick walls steeped in more than 1000 years of history, this imposing building, classified as a Historic Monument, will dazzle you with its very fine state of preservation. You will love discovering its majestic keep, its harrows and its drawbridge, typical of the defensive architecture of ancient castles. From its high ramparts, you can contemplate a magnificent 360° panorama over all of Lourdes and its surroundings, the sanctuary and the Pyrenees. After visiting this beautiful building and its botanical gardens, visit the Pyrenean Museum to discover the history and culture of the region. Then take the Pic du Jer funicular to admire one of the most beautiful views of the Pyrenees: during this walk, you will have the opportunity to discover some of the most beautiful Pyrenean peaks, but also Tarbes, Pau, the Argelès-Gazots valley and Lourdes below. At the edge of the Pyrenees, Lourdes is a fabulous gateway for ski enthusiasts who, during the winter, can enjoy its proximity to some of the most popular Pyrenean resorts. The slopes of Hautacam, Mongolia or Cauterets will delight fans of skiing, surfing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or dog sledding. In summer, Lourdes will delight lovers of excursions thanks to its many hiking trails through some of the most wonderful sites in the Hautes-Pyrénées such as the Cirque de Gavarnie, the Parc National des Pyrénées, the Pic du Midi de Bigorre or the Pont d'Espagne. The Chemin Vert, the Voie Verte des Gaves, the Chemins de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle, the Chemin de vie de Bernadette, the GR 101 and the GR 78, the itinerary of the Tour de Baloum, the Chemin Henri IV and the Tour du Lac de Lourdes will be perfect routes for hiking, horse riding or cycling. Note also that Lake Lourdes (classified as a Natura 2000 site) will be perfect for cool breaks on hot summer days: you can relax on its beaches, swim, fish, kayak, golf, paddle, canoe or pedal boat.
