Located on the border with Spain, in the Hautes-Pyrénées, Cauterets is a winter sports and wellness resort on the threshold of the Pyrenees National Park. Thanks to its geographical situation, the commune benefits from several grandiose natural sites giving access to unique panoramas.

Since the vogue of thermalism in the 19th century, the town has become a popular destination for relaxation-oriented stays. Indeed, the naturally warm waters and the serene environment of Cauterets have made it an idyllic place to recharge your batteries. At that time, the Baths of Caesar already knew a great fame. It had become a place of passage for many personalities (notably the writers George Sand and Victor Hugo). Another relaxing stop in the commune: the Bains du Rocher. A true temple of well-being, this site offers a sauna, a hammam, an outdoor pool of 200 m² and a rest room.

Canyoning, paragliding, canoeing, kayaking, climbing... In Cauterets, the sportsmen also have the embarrassment of the choice. Hiking, in particular, is a major attraction of the commune and its development has allowed the general public access to natural tourist sites otherwise inaccessible. An ancient trade route with Spain, the Spanish Bridge has seduced visitors for centuries with its majestic beauty and tranquility. This site, which became a mass tourist destination in the last century, has been converted into a protected natural area and provides access to Lake Gaube. For a total panoramic view of the peaks of the Pyrenees, you should visit the Cirque des Lys. Accessible by cable car, it is also the privileged place for mountain bike enthusiasts.

During the winter period, these two sites are transformed into renowned ski areas. Cirque du Lys' formidable snow cover earned it recognition as the world's snowiest resort in 2013. Added to this is the Oakley Freestyle Park snowboard resort, developed in partnership with the American brand of the same name.

In the gastronomic register, many Cauteresian restaurants offer a quality service. Among them, the Grande Fache has a wide choice of tasty dishes in local colours. Visitors are delighted by the warm atmosphere and the benevolence of the hosts, who do not hesitate to advise the gourmands on the specialities of the menu. Another gourmet stop not to be missed : the Cheeserie which allows you (as its name suggests) to taste a selection of hand-picked cheeses, as well as local charcuterie.

Very nice hikes, but expect to walk up and down hills. Beautiful landscapes and interesting visits: Gavarnie, Pic du Midi, Lac de Gaube, Pic du Lys and (further away) the little train of Artouste. For the restaurants, it is necessary to think of reserving because there are less places because of the measures taken after the Covid.

Going to the Pont d'Espagne: magnificent place. Les Bains du Rocher : SPA very pleasant but choose your schedule to avoid the crowd. Avenue du Général Leclerc: huts where you can buy cheese, raclette and charcuterie (very friendly shopkeepers) and, just next door for a snack, sale of succulent waffles.
