Known for its heritage of incomparable beauty, Vitré, labeled "Ville et Pays d'Art et d'Histoire" (City and Country of Art and History) opens the doors to more than 1,000 years of history thanks to an extraordinary heritage. A strong city of the Marches de Bretagne, it unveils along its streets emblematic monuments of the region, starting with its unavoidable castle. Majestic, imposing and characteristic of Vitré, it is a masterpiece of medieval architecture, and impresses by its dimensions as well as by its original silhouette. Perched on a schist promontory, it dominates the whole city of Vitré with its towers and turrets. Defensive and then residential, it became a prison before being classified as a historical monument. It has been renovated and adorned with a museum, the Museum of the Castle, which offers you a tour of the Silver Tower, the Saint-Laurent Tower and the Oratory Tower, to discover the furniture, clothes and paintings that will take you from the 15th to the 19th century in a snap of the fingers. In the shadow of the castle, discover the half-timbered houses and the private mansions that are endlessly scattered in the heart of the town of Vitré, old houses dating from the Middle Ages, which once housed the merchants and the wealth from the hemp trade. In the historic center, don't miss the Notre-Dame church, a treasure of Gothic and Renaissance art with the air of a cathedral, but also the neo-Gothic railway station of the Chemins de Fer de l'Ouest, the Trémoïlle barracks, or the neo-Romanesque Saint-Martin church. After marveling at the elaborate facades of the houses in the historic center, take the time to stroll along the cobbled streets of Vitré, which are full of small boutiques with character and restaurants where you can sit down.

Our advice? As a lover, it's great to stroll along the Vilaine river which, far from deserving its name, runs through the city and creates little bubbles of nature where it's nice to play and relax under the sun. Views of the castle, perfect places to picnic, you will discover everything from the Promenade du Val, and the Pré des Lavandières. Don't miss the Château des Rochers Sévigné and its magnificent park, the nightly walks to discover the illuminated heritage, to walk along the rue Notre-Dame, the rue d'En-Bas, the rue de la Poterie for its porch houses, or the rue de la Baudrairie...
