On the banks of the Vienne River, in the heart of a fertile region known for its wines and its historical capital, Rivière is a real nugget, located in the department of Indre-et-Loire.

Lovers of history, beautiful French-style heritage and panoramas dotted with vineyards as far as the eye can see? Welcome to Rivière! A small town nestled in the Centre-Val de Loire region, Rivière is the perfect place to stay to discover one of the most beautiful jewels of France: the Loire Castles. Adjacent to Chinon, in the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park, Rivière does not strictly speaking have an imposing heritage, but the place is particularly pleasant and conducive to relaxation as well as to outdoor activities such as hiking or mountain biking, thanks to the many signposted itineraries that criss-cross the city and its area. Once your sneakers are firmly attached to your feet, there are many sites that you can discover, simply by walking around or during sporting excursions. First but not least: Chinon! With its vineyards as far as the eye can see and its famous Royal Fortress, Chinon, which also lies on the meanders of the Vienne, impresses with the splendour of its heritage. Built on its rocky spur overlooking the river and the village, the Royal Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is made up of buildings erected between the 10th and 15th centuries, and offers its visitors magnificent exhibitions and viewpoints to discover, both on the fortress and on the region. From Rivière, you can also easily reach the nearby castle of Montsoreau (15th century), or the 17th century Château d'Ussé, known to have inspired the story of Sleeping Beauty. Nearby, the magnificent Château d'Azay-le-Rideau, an imposing 16th century palace, is undeniably worth a visit for the splendour of its location. A true jewel of the Renaissance, surrounded by the fresh waters of the Indre, it offers photography enthusiasts a wonderful setting to indulge their passion, especially at sunset when the castle is reflected in the river. And how can you stay in Rivière without stopping off at the Château de Saumur? A medieval fortress set on a hill just 35 kilometres from Rivière, Saumur is worth a visit for its marvellous castle, its famous Cadre Noir (which trains the teachers of the National Riding School) with its legendary performances, its Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, its troglodytes and its little addresses perfect for learning about the flavours of the region.

Because a stay in Rivière without having succumbed to the delights of the local gastronomy would not really be perfect! Also, after having swallowed fouace, fouée, tourangelle, rillettes from Tours, rillettes with fish from the Loire, rillons, andouillettes with Vouvray, goat's cheese, nougats, taped pears, truffles, Saint-Maure-de-Touraine, saffron omelettes and other AOC wines from Chinon and Saumur, don't miss to visit the Château de Villandry, a magnificent Renaissance palace known for its gardens and labyrinths, but also Tours, and the Royal Château of Amboise (15th century) overlooking the Loire River. Finally, the Château du Clos Lucé and its museum established in the home of Leonardo da Vinci (85 kilometres away) or the Château de Chenonceau (80 kilometres away) will complete your visit of the Loire Valley Castles region!
