It is in Indre-et-Loire that the charming commune of Azay-le-Rideau is located. Located a few kilometres from Tours and Chinon, Azay-le-Rideau is famous for its magnificent castle which attracts many visitors every year. Azay-le-Rideau is the ideal starting point for a visit to the Châteaux de la Loire and offers its visitors many activities, from bike rides to wine tastings, to share with family, couples or friends.
Built during the reign of Francis I, this Renaissance-style castle of Azay-le-Rideau is a true masterpiece of 16th-century architecture. Located on an island drawn by the meanders of the Indre, the castle stands in the middle of a green, absolutely romantic setting. Described by Honoré de Balzac as a "faceted diamond, set by the Indre", it seduces visitors as much by the beauty of its façade reflected in the water as by its interior ornaments. With its staircase of honour, its Italian decorations as well as its landscape park made of ginkgo biloba and sequoias where dragonflies swarm, the castle of Azay-le-Rideau is one of the pearls of the castles of the Loire, to visit absolutely.
The town of Azay-le-Rideau shelters a second magnificent castle: that of Islette. Caught between the arms of the Indre, it was once the scene of Camille Claudel and Auguste Rodin's loves. Also in Renaissance style, it was completed in 1530. You will find a bronze sculpture by the artist Camille Claudel entitled "La Petite Châtelaine", as well as two imposing towers, a round path, a chapel and a large hall. You can rent boats to sail around the castle, relax on deckchairs, picnic on the banks of the river, and children can even dress up as princesses and knights. Its beautiful gardens, romantic bridge over the water and remarkable architecture in the background an ideal place for walking.
15 kilometres from Azay-le-Rideau, don't miss the Château d'Ussé if it seems magical to you, it is certainly because it inspired Charles Perrault for his work "La Belle au Bois Dormant". Its French-style gardens designed by Le Nôtre, made of beautifully flowered flower beds, Lebanese cedars (offered by Chateaubriand), lemon and orange trees are worth a visit.
Bike enthusiasts ? Azay-le-Rideau is definitely made for you. The west of Touraine is famous for its beautiful hiking (hiking and cycling) routes, and the commune is no exception by offering its visitors multiple loops of discovery. The loop "De l'Osier au Panier", 21 kilometres long, will take you from the centre of Azay-le-Rideau to its church Saint-Symphorien (with medieval decor), to the mill on the Indre, passing by the troglodyte valley of Goupillères, the commune of Saché (known for its castle) to finish by a discovery of the town of Villaines-les-Rochers, where troglodyte houses cohabit with wicker producers. Another loop to borrow absolutely : that of the "Sleeping Beauty". 8 kilometers long, it is perfect for a day to conquer the treasures of the region. From the forest of Chinon to the castle of Ussé, via the banks of the Loire listed as World Heritage by UNESCO and the oratory of Notre-Dame-des-Eaux, this walk is really worth it. Take advantage of this excursion to picnic at the edge of the Loire, and to admire the sunset over the castle of La Belle au Bois Dormant.

Thus, you will certainly have the opportunity to taste during your stay a glass of Gamay, Grolleau, Chenin or Cabernet Sauvignon, accompanied by rillettes of Tours, rillons of Touraine, fishes of the Loire spiced up with a touch of saffron of Touraine, a tart of the wine grower, andouillette, melon, truffle or Sainte-Maure, for meals under the sign of sharing and conviviality.

There is no shortage of good restaurants in Azay le Rideau, but I particularly recommend "Les Grottes" which is exceptional in terms of its staff, its setting and its special, carefully prepared cuisine. On a simpler level: "La Fringale".
