Historical, cultural and resourcing, the town of Ancenis has everything to please travellers in search of authenticity and fresh air. With its wide open spaces, architectural heritage and splendid views, this dynamic destination will delight the whole family.

To the sound of the lapping water of the Royal River, by bike or at the foot of a large dungeon, Ancenis can be visited all year round and is sure to satisfy all your desires. Clinging to the banks of the Loire, about forty kilometres from Nantes, the commune of Ancenis is located in the Loire-Atlantique department, in the heart of the Pays de la Loire. Built on an island of which there are still some remains along boulevard Joseph Vincent and boulevard Léon Sécher, Ancenis will surprise you with the richness and diversity of its heritage. Its most beautiful building is undoubtedly its castle built in the 10th century, absolutely splendid. This historic monument (which had the privilege of welcoming Louis XIV for a night) is part of the "Marches of Brittany" thanks to its ramparts (a little like the castle of Pontivy or Dinan). Located not far from the bridge linking the banks of the Loire, it impresses with its large drawbridge, its Renaissance facade and its Gothic style houses. Open to visitors, it hosts exhibitions within its walls, and from its towers offers very beautiful panoramic views of Ancenis and the Loire River that flows through it. To discover Ancenis as it should be, walk along its quays and take its suspension bridge; then visit the heart of its medieval city, passing by Saint-Pierre church or the former Rohan barracks, the Ursulines Convent, the dolmen of the Pierre Couvretière, the villa of the Douvelière and the gardens that surround the castle.

But Ancenis is also a little paradise for nature outings. Climb on your bike to discover the landscaped paths that dot the vineyards and the surrounding villages! A must? Cycling along the banks of the Loire (or walking for the bravest!) to discover all its most beautiful faces, from its fertile plains to its oldest castles. For the Loire-Atlantique department, 100 kilometres of marked cycle paths await you... Just that! We recommend that you stop at the medieval castle of Oudon which, from the High Tower perched 30 metres away, offers a breathtaking view of the Loire and its villages. But the Loire also offers a perfect setting for lovers of water sports who can discover its shores with their arms, during sporting excursions by canoe or kayak: if these day trips are magnificent, we also advise you to opt for early morning outings, in order to enjoy the calm of the river and the soft colours that illuminate the sky during the beautiful summer days.

Finally, it is impossible to stay in the Pays d'Ancenis and taste the flavours of the land. On the menu? As for drinks, Malvoisie, Gamay rouge or Muscadet des Coteaux de Loire will necessarily be on the menu. On the plate side, you can't miss the legendary fish in white butter, a good pan-fried eels in butter and garlic, a piece of Curé Nantais on fresh bread or strawberry tarts for dessert.
