Explore Préfailles
It is on the Loire-Atlantique coast, in the heart of the wonderful Côte de Jade, that the town of Préfailles is located. As one of the oldest seaside resorts on the Atlantic Coast, Préfailles will offer its visitors a perfect setting for rest. Its beaches, sandy coasts and cliffs will be the setting for many family activities, both at sea and on land.
Unveiling 11 kilometres of rugged coastline facing the ocean, Préfailles is located between the Loire estuary and the bay of Bourgneuf. Not far from Pornic, this family destination has much to offer its curious visitors: well known for the virtues of its curative waters since the 19th century, the seaside resort with its slightly outdated charm has managed to preserve over the years its former character, thanks to its beautiful villas typical of seaside architecture nicknamed the "Ladies of the Coast", as well as its chalets and its bourgeois houses with sloping roofs. The "Grand Bazaar" in the middle of Grande Rue is a wonderful example of the rise of tourism in Préfailles in the 1900s: we recommend that you push its door open to discover its amazing collections of kites perched on the ceiling above the store's shelves. Pointe Saint-Gildas is certainly the most visited site in the municipality: wild and pleasant, this multifaceted Regional Nature Reserve is the ideal place for family excursions to discover the natural resources of Préfailles. With its varied fauna and generous flora, a total of 421 animal species and 341 plant species have so far been recorded on Pointe Saint-Gildas. Note also that from its 12-metre high semaphore, a strategic place to watch and contemplate the ocean, the panorama is truly breathtaking over the Loire estuary, the Pointe and the neighbouring Baie de Bourgneuf. Pointe Saint-Gildas is also the starting point for many hiking trails, particularly via the GR 8. You will have the opportunity to take multiple routes that tell the story of the town, such as the "Peintres de Préfailles" circuit, but also the "Histoire de Préfailles", the "Circuit de la Vallée de Pasquin" (5.5 kilometres) and the "Défenses de la Côte". So many paths that will allow you to contemplate on foot or by bike all the most beautiful panoramas that the town has to offer, from its old blockhouses to its spots that inspired many painters, as well as its old casino and its beaches. The site of the chapel is also very popular for walks by the sea: overlooking the Grande Plage, this 1852 chapel offers you from its square a breathtaking panoramic view of the immensity of the sea. Classical music lovers, be aware that the church hosts many renowned performances and concerts during the summer season.
At Préfailles, we particularly like water sports, and that's a big part of why the resort is so popular. From red sand beaches (Anse du Sud, Port-Meleu, Grande Plage) to golden coves facing due south such as "La Raize" or "Margaret", a wide mosaic of activities awaits young and old. Beach club, beach volleyball tournaments, surfing, catamaran, paddle, sailing, jet-ski, fishing, towed buoys, boat rental and kayaking at sunset will certainly make you spend an unforgettable holiday under the pre-failed sun.
