History, culture, rich heritage and preserved valleys: this is what awaits you if you choose to settle in Puy-l'Evêque. A beautifully preserved medieval city, it promises beautiful discoveries along its centuries-old alleys.
Built on its high rocky promontory overlooking the Lot, in the heart of the Cahors vineyard, Puy L'Evêque is as fascinating as it is surprising. A medieval town in a strategic position, it is made up of a large maze of cobbled streets and high residences of ochre and golden stones, whose colour is poetically reflected in the calm waters of the Lot. Take the time to stroll around and discover its most beautiful corners, on foot or by bike (be careful though: it's climbing!). A city of 7 churches, Puy-l'Evêque has a strong architectural heritage marked by history. The Saint-Sauveur church built during the 14th century, but also the Saint-Michel chapel, the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption church and the Saint-Sulpice church are worth a visit. A loop called "circuit des 7 églises" will allow you, thanks to nearly 25 kilometres of trails, to discover all the beauty of Puy-l'Evêque and its neighbouring villages, while walking through the alluvial plain and the Lot Valley. But the historic heart of the city is also worth a visit: it is full of many very old sites, such as its 12th century keep, the last witness to the remains of the episcopal palace. The chapel of the Blue Penitents of the 15th century, the Renaissance Castel, the Château Lychairie, the Calvary cross of the 15th century, the Episcopal Tower, the Château Bovilla street of the same name, the former Convent of the Capuchins, the medieval sculptures of the rue Saint-Sauveur, but also the magnificent stately homes, the superb rue du Donjon, the splendid doors of the rue des Capucins and the place Georges Henry are worth a visit. From the latter, walk along the brook of Les Clédelles to the Old Port at the very bottom of the city, for remarkable views of the Lot. During this walk, you will not be able to miss the small streets of character near the embarkation hold: called "rue des Bateliers", "rue des Cloutiers", "rue des Tanneurs", "rue des Teinturiers" or "rue des Sabotiers", they are not without reminding you of the many economic activities that once supported the city of Puy-l'Evêque, which exported its know-how (and in particular its wine) in bins to Bordeaux. If there is another walk to take in Puy-l'Evêque, it is the one of its hanging gardens: hung on the cliffside, these gardens offer an unobstructed view of the Lot!
Finally, as for activities, you will have only the embarrassment of choice to occupy your days in Puy-l'Evêque. Hiking at first, is certainly the most popular activity for travellers passing through the city. The GR36 trails linking the Channel to the Mediterranean in particular, pass through the town: they will allow you to reach the towns of Castelfranc, Sarlat-la-Canéda, Cahors, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, Beauregard and Savignac in a few hours. The Lot and Vineyard Valley is also full of sporting and gourmet itineraries, which we particularly recommend to wine lovers. This same valley will also delight cycling fans with 160 kilometres of greenways and other cycle routes winding through the vineyards and rivers that dot the department.
Very beautiful village. Several visits and activities to do in the surroundings.
