In the heart of the Lozerian Cevennes, in a setting of green mountains, Villefort is located at the entrance of the Altier gorges. At the foot of Mount Lozère, on the old Regordane path (the trade route that linked the Puy-en-Velay to the Gard) now renamed GR700, the commune is a rather atypical postcard, made of high stone houses surrounded by mountains, and bathed by the calm waters of the Altier. Authentic, this unique village is a real historical reserve, rich in a rich and very old heritage. In the medieval hamlet of La Garde Guérin (12th century), you will have the impression that time has stood still: old brick buildings, medieval buildings and tangled alleys give this village an immeasurable charm. Take the time to visit Villefort through its alleys full of history, a visit that will be facilitated by explanatory panels that will retrace the history of the village from the time of the Voie de Régordane. You will discover the 17th century Saint-Loup chapel, the 19th century Saint-Victorin parish church, but also old Gothic houses and the small hamlet of Le Pouget. The castle of Castanet on the road to Mende is worth a visit, as is the railway viaduct over the Altier, not forgetting the dam and reservoir of Bayard sur l'Altier.

Put on good shoes and set off on an adventure on the side of Mont Lozère: at an altitude of 1699 metres, it is the highest point in the Cévennes. A true paradise for lovers of sports and nature, Mont Lozère is the perfect place to hike, thanks in particular to the presence of magnificent sites such as the Chassezac gorges and its canyons which attract lovers of canyoning, caving, but also tree climbing and white water swimming. The GR72, the GR44, the GR68 "Tour du Mont Lozère" and many other itineraries will perfect your sporting excursions. A visit is absolutely to be made: that of the lake of Villefort. Born in 1965 following the construction of the dam, it is the main point of attraction of the commune. Along its 7.3 kilometres of coastline, you can go hiking, mountain biking, horse-riding or jogging all year round. In summer, sailing is the flagship activity of the lake which, thanks to its 127 hectares, is the delight of those who love to glide. Canoes, kayaks and pedal boats also have a place of choice, while the supervised beach of the lake will be the ideal place to bubble under the sun. Finally, it is impossible to visit Villefort without discovering its gastronomy. Gourmet as you wish, it gives pride of place to pâtés, but also to jam that you can taste with blueberries, chestnuts or raspberries in particular. Cold meats such as Lozère dry sausage, grass sausage, Lozère dry ham, fricandeau, but also pouteille, Aligot, bag of bones, manouls and truffade will complete your visit of Villefort, until the end of the papillae.
