Separated from Ille-et-Vilaine by the Couesnon (which, as the saying goes, "in its madness put the Mont in Normandy"), the commune of Pontorson is located in the department of Manche. Founded in the 12th century according to the wish of William the Conqueror, this ancient city was a stronghold just at the gates of Brittany. If the fortress that once stood in the heart of the village was razed to the ground by order of Louis XIII in 1623, there are still some remains today, such as the beautiful church of Notre-Dame de Pontorson, which we recommend you to visit, or some private mansions such as the Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Antoine de la Charité, or the Guischard mansion also called "Maison Romane". Also to be seen? The old Protestant temple of the 15th century, the former residence of the Counts of Montgomery for the fascinating beauty of its ceilings, parquet floors, stairs, woodwork and decorations, not forgetting the Moidrey Mill. Dated 1806, it has been renovated and now produces flour. If it is worth a visit, it is above all so that budding photographers can admire from its foot a splendid panorama of the Mount in the background, and immortalize the view, for a guaranteed shower of "likes" on social networks!

In addition to its ancient heritage, which will delight history lovers, Pontorson is also a little Eden for all fans of green holidays. Neighbouring Mont-Saint-Michel, only 9 kilometres from the latter and 22 kilometres from Avranches (known for its splendid cathedral), Pontorson is the favourite place for walkers and nature lovers. Crossed by the river Couesnon, Pontorson is also dotted with marshes for more than 10 kilometres, and polders on nearly 5000 hectares. Thanks to a temperate climate, and the protection of the nearby Mont-Saint-Michel, the commune is particularly suitable for hiking in a pleasant setting, as it has a myriad of routes that will take you on foot, on horseback or by bike, in the direction of the Mont, the neighbouring villages (Vessey, Sougéal, Beauvoir, Macey...) and its splendid countryside.
