On the shores of the Parc Naturel Régional des Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin, 27 kilometres from Coutances and 40 kilometres from Saint-Lô, Saint-Germain-sur-Ay has all the cards in hand to enable families looking for a holiday in the great outdoors to spend a wonderful holiday.

A small seaside resort on the west coast of the Cotentin, just opposite the famous island of Jersey, Saint-Germain-sur-Ay is one of those destinations that is hard to forget. Between salt meadows and long sandy beaches, the origins of this green setting date back to prehistoric times. If agriculture and fishing were once the economic engine of the village, it is salt that has brought it its reputation today. Marked by the Second World War, the town has a very elegant architectural heritage, which we advise you to discover by taking a walk in the heart of its village. Impossible to miss the church of Saint-Germain: in Romanesque style, this 12th century church is worth the detour both for its exterior architecture typical of the local landscape and for its interior decorations, including a Virgin and Child which dates back to the 15th century. But if Saint-Germain-sur-Ay is known in the region, it is above all because it is marked with the seal of Vauban, who added a large guard house to the port of Saint-Germain in 1669. Although it was once used to monitor maritime traffic between the Cotentin and the Channel Islands, in 1945 it was transformed into a chapel, known as the "Chapelle du Grapillon". A real little cocoon of tranquillity, this place is inseparable from Saint-Germain-sur-Ay: it is the perfect place to admire the harbour of Saint-Germain, and to contemplate the high tides, when the sky, the sea and the salt meadows where the sheep graze are tinted with bright colours. The area lends itself perfectly to hiking and cycling thanks to a vast network of marked trails. From the mouth of the Ay river to the banks of La Brosse, passing by the magnificent and wild Pointe du Banc, you will discover all the beauty of this little corner of paradise, as exhilarating as it is resourcing.

If the seaside resort of Saint-Germain-sur-Ay is so appreciated, it is for the splendour of its coastline... And its beaches! If there are only two beaches in Saint-Germain-sur-Ay, they are sure to satisfy all your desires. The Pointe du Banc beach (partly naturist) is perfect for iodized walks as well as for quiet breaks under the sun, when the central beach will be ideal for families. Situated in the town centre, with a few shops on the seafront, it is popular for swimming, and becomes a huge open-air playground for fishing enthusiasts who come in large numbers at low tide, when the sea retreats far, far away. In terms of water activities, you will have the opportunity to practice a whole range of water sports, from stand-up paddle to sailing, not forgetting the longe-côte, the perfect activity to combine the love of hiking and the sea.
