Between land and sea, in one of the most beautiful corners of Brittany, Locoal-Mendon may not tell you anything at first. An intimate, discreet destination, this nugget, as beautiful as it is exotic, will win over the hearts of those who love wide open spaces and nature, for wonderful moments suspended on Breton soil.
A few steps from Auray and Carnac, Quiberon and Étel, Locoal-Mendon is one of those places that are hard to forget. Located between the canton of Pluvigner and the coastal region of Carnac and Quiberon, this charming town flourishes on the banks of the poetic Ria d'Étel. Both rural and maritime, this town shaped by artisans, oyster farmers and sailors has preserved its heritage and authenticity, and that's why we love it so much. Like all Breton towns, Locoal-Mendon is rich in ancient history, which can be seen in its old stones. Also, to know everything about its history, take the time to walk around the heart of the town. You will discover the 15th century church of Saint-Pierre de Mendon, the 11th century church of Saint-Goal de Locoal, and many chapels such as the chapel of Sainte-Brigitte, the chapel of Saint-Gildas, and the chapel of Sainte-Marguerite. In addition to this religious heritage, there are oratories, crosses, fountains, and a whole range of megalithic monuments and other Gallic remains: the Mané-er-Loh Dolmen, the Locqueltas Dolmen, the Mané-Bras Covered Alley, and lochs such as the Sainte-Brigitte cattail and the Prostlon stele will complete your leap back in time. Walk along the Cadoudal path, and don't miss the old farms and picturesque thatched houses that give Locoal-Mendon its charm.
A land of tradition, Locoal-Mendon is known to visitors for its Bagdad de Ronsed Mor, which perpetuates the age-old songs and music of Brittany, but the town is also renowned for its oysters! At any time of the day, you can taste the oysters of the Ria d'Étel, at the counter of a brasserie, in a pastry shop (yes, yes!) or during a dinner with a view... We dream of it, don't you? You can also opt for pancakes or galettes (with andouille de Guéméné in particular!), traditional but unavoidable during your stay in Morbihan!
As for activities, Locoal-Mendon is a little paradise for those who like hiking, tennis, horse riding or water sports. Thanks to a whole network of marked paths, among which the unavoidable GR34 which criss-crosses the whole of Brittany, you will be able to discover the Island of Saint-Cado and the Ria d'Étel, Carnac and its legendary megalithic alignments (less than 14 kilometres away), but also to discover the oyster beds and the small beaches which run alongside the village Our advice? Don't miss the Pointe du Verdon. At the very end of this peninsula on the Ria d'Étel, you will find an absolutely idyllic and quiet beach, the perfect place to rest and watch the birds. For swimming, we can only recommend the beaches of Étel or Erdeven: lazing around, diving into the water and water activities for the whole family will make this Breton interlude an unforgettable moment!
