It is in the department of Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, that the small village of Caumont-sur-Durance takes place. Nestling along the Durance River which waters it all the way to the south, Caumont-sur-Durance is well known as the neighbour of the famous city of Avignon.

What makes one glad to stay in Caumont-sur-Durance is above all its living environment. Green, and bordering Avignon, this small town at the foot of the hills has origins dating back to well before our era, as evidenced by traces of dwellings dating from the 6th century BC found on the side of the hill of Bonpas. Occupied by the Romans in the 2nd century and destroyed in the 5th century by barbarian invasions, Caumont took its name in the 11th century, a name inherited from "Calvis Mont" which means "Bald Mountain". Small pearl of Provence because of its absolutely magnificent natural environment, Caumont-sur-Durance is also a pearl of Provence because of its admirable heritage. Surrounded by fields of olive trees, the heart of the old village is a real open-air museum, surrounded by ramparts solidly built during the 16th century. Typical of Provence, Caumont-sur-Durance was also known for its production of olive oil as well, many mills and oil presses can be found in the village, such as the one nowadays at the bottom of the rue de la Dévalade, on the ramparts. Go through the Posterlon Gate, the Lower Castle (rue Aristide Briand), before finally discovering the 18th century Porte Neuve in the north of the village, and the 14th century Porte de Cavaillon in the very south of Caumont. The Tour de l'Agache located very close to the church is a must, as is the Saint-Symphorien church, reputed to be one of the largest churches in the Vaucluse with its 19.5-metre high nave with keystone vault. With its splendid organ, sculptures and paintings, it is a must during your stay. The Saint-Symphorien chapel of Provencal Romanesque style, the chapel of the White Penitents, and that of Notre-Dame des Pauvres will complete your discovery of the religious buildings in the commune. But that was without counting on the Chartreuse de Bonpas! Founded in the 12th century, it is an essential stopover for anyone visiting Caumont-sur-Durance. Monastery built by the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem, it is worth the detour for the perfection of its imposing architecture. Its entrance arch, its Grand Cellier, its reading room, its chapel, its wine storehouse and its elegant formal gardens nestling under the shelter of tall umbrella pines will make your visit a moment to remember for a long time. In addition to its historical capital, the Chartreuse offers wine tastings of wines from the Rhone Valley in its cellar, to introduce visitors to Bonpas' dictionary, which says that "Wine remains while the world turns".

Finally, after taking the time for a bucolic walk in the Roman gardens of Caumont-sur-Durance to enjoy splendid panoramas of the Alpilles, the Monts de Vaucluse, the Luberon and the Ventoux, put on good sneakers for a few hours of hiking that will allow you to contemplate the most beautiful corners of this magnificent region. Via the Garance path, along the Durance river, through the hills of Piécaud, the plains, along the Mourgon or Pesquier canal, without forgetting the walking and mountain bike routes leading to Avignon, and Cavaillon, it is impossible not to succumb to the charms of Provence!
