In the Vaucluse department, on the border with the Gard, from which it is separated by the wide meanders of the Rhône, the commune of Mornas is one of those nuggets that deserve to be known. Between history and heritage, legends and gastronomy, this pearl of the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur region has many secrets to reveal.

It is a few steps from Orange and Bagnols-sur-Cèze, in the heart of a region known for its traditions and its breathtaking panoramas that the village of Mornas flourishes. Built at the foot of a rock with one of its peaks overhanging the void, Mornas impresses as much by its location as by its architecture. It is in fact at the top of its cliff, at an altitude of 137 metres, that its wonderful fortress was built. Built during the 11th century on the left bank of the Rhone, this former stronghold, a defensive fortress marked by both the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion, is now a must for any visit to Mornas, and is worth the detour as much for its splendid building as for the guided tours led by soldiers, ladies and knights who will not fail to tell you about its history. Its little plus? Protecting the village for centuries, this medieval fortress offers from its ramparts incredible views of Mont Ventoux, but also the Rhone valley that winds towards the sea and the Dentelles de Montmirail.

After taking the time to visit the fortress, go back down to the town of Mornas to discover its authentic and charming streets. You can visit it on foot or by bike, depending on your wishes, by passing along the Cours des Platanes, planted with trees since 1811, or along the dyke built in 1860 following the flooding of the Rhône. You will certainly discover the beauty of the Saint-Georges church built in 1869 and located in the Grande Rue, which bears the inscriptions "Liberté, égalité, fraternité", as well as the entrance gates to the town, which are the Portail Firminin, the Porte Saint-Nicolas and the Porte Saint-Pierre, which together constitute one of the last vestiges of the village's fortifications. You can also discover one of the oldest houses in Mornas, the Maison Médiévale near the Porte Saint-Nicolas, as well as the Sainte-Baudile chapel perched on the crest of the cliff, the 12th century Val Romigier church and very old troglodyte dwellings dug into the cliffs overlooking Mornas.

Finally, if the markets and the festivities of the fortress (such as the Medieval Festival of Mornas in July) will not fail to punctuate your stay, we also recommend that you travel through the region to discover its most beautiful faces: Orange, Rochegude, Bollène, but also Sorgues, Avignon, Montélimar or Uzès and Vallon-Pont-d'Arc are destinations located less than an hour's drive away that will not fail to amaze the whole family.
