The village of Grues is located next to La Faute-sur-Mer and La Tranche-sur-Mer. Facing the Perthuis Breton and the Ile de Ré, Grues is located in the heart of the National Nature Reserve of Saint-Denis-du-Payré. Adjacent to the coastline but sufficiently secluded to avoid the crowds, Grues is ideally located for a quiet family or romantic holiday on the Vendée coastline. Its little plus, and not the least? The commune benefits from an exceptional micro-climate which gives it an annual amount of sunshine comparable to that of the Côte d'Azur... nothing less! The Lay, the main coastal river of the Vendée, runs along its entire western flank and Grues is only 5 minutes from the sea, watch in hand. A town of water, it is also bordered by the Chenal Vieux and the Chenal de la Raque, rivers that you can walk along and which will delight fishermen, who can find carp, pike-perch, eels and pikes.

As for heritage, you will certainly appreciate discovering the Saint-Nicolas church, or the typical architecture of the village, where it is good to walk or cycle. Moreover, the most experienced mountain bikers can try to reach La Roche-sur-Yon, situated about forty kilometres away, while families can easily reach the beaches of La Tranche-sur-Mer and La Faute-sur-Mer after a ten kilometre pedal. Our advice? Go along the Lay river which flows into the ocean at La Faute-sur-Mer, or better still, opt for a pedal boat session on the Lay to reach the beaches of the ocean resorts! On these beaches, you will be spoilt for choice. Marine escapades to discover boat piloting, catamaran outings on a sea of oil, water games on the Aiguillon-sur-Mer lake, coastal kayaking, canoeing, paddle, boat trips, swimming and other activities at sea will give your stay in the Vendée a delicious little taste of adventure. Oh, and speaking of taste, it is impossible to stay in Grues without visiting one of the restaurants in the village or in the neighbouring towns, to discover the flavours of the country! On the menu? Prefou, trouspinette, oysters, sardines, mussels from the Bay of Aiguillon, salicornia, gâche vendéenne, mogette, Vendée ham, Challans duck, Noirmoutier potatoes and other delicacies from the sea will delight the taste buds of the whole family.
