It is in the heart of Tuscany that the charming municipality of Montaione is located. Ideally located less than an hour from the region's most famous cities, Volterra, Pisa, Florence, Siena, Lucca, San Gimignano and Vinci, Montaione is one of those destinations where the sweet scent of medieval Italy reigns. From its hill at an altitude of 373 metres, Montaione dominates the contours of the green and unspoilt valley of the Elsa River, covered with vines and olive trees typical of the Tuscan landscape. A sporting, natural and cultural city, Montaione is certain not to leave you indifferent.
Near Castelfiorentino, between Volterra and Florence, Montaione is as surprising as it is fascinating. The municipality was once inhabited by the Romans, as evidenced by the presence of a cistern dating from the 2nd century on a road between Gambassi Terme and the village. We recommend that you start your visit to this picturesque village with the Civic Museum: located in the Pretorian Palace, this magnificent museum tells the history of the Montaione region, through numerous archaeological finds and the discovery of fossils and minerals found around the city. Then comes the church of San Regolo, the main building of Montaione: its 13th century Tuscan Romanesque architecture is really worth a visit, as is the view that the church offers over the historic centre from its dome overlooking the entire city. For the anecdote, a legend tells that the church bells began to ring on their own at the death of Saint Vivaldo, as if by magic: it is for this reason that he was buried under the church altar, before being moved 900 years later. Continue your journey to discover a little further on, Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, the church of Saints Guiseppe and Lucia (16th century) before venturing towards the Sanctuary of La Pietrina. Made famous by a painting depicting "the Virgin and the Child", by Bartolo de Fredi, this small church perched on a rocky peak is a fabulous spot that will allow you to contemplate pleasant panoramas (preferably at sunset) over the Montaione region and its hills spread out to the foothills of Volterra.
A true green jewel of the rich Tuscany region, Montaione offers a setting that is ideal for rest and relaxation. Put on good shoes or climb on a bicycle to go this time to the side of the castle of Vignale hidden in the heart of a wooded environment, and then to the side of the Sacred Mount of San Vivaldo (also known as the "Jerusalem of Tuscany"), Castelfalfi, Tonda, Sughera and Iano, before losing yourself in the hollow of the heady valleys of Montaione, covered with vines and olive trees. You should also know that the whole of Tuscany is a fabulous playground for cyclists, thanks to a very large number of hiking trails criss-crossing its valleys, including 10 "green" trails and the "VTT Montaione Area Trail", a network of mountain bike trails crossing the entire territory of the municipality.
Noble products from the vineyards and olive groves that line the surrounding valleys, extra virgin olive oil and "chianti" wine invite themselves to all the good restaurants in Montaione. Do not hesitate to venture into the small streets of its historic centre, most of which are home to warm shops where you can taste the rich flavours of Tuscan cuisine. On the menu? Tuscan bread truffle, game stews, beef "alla fiorentina", "tagliata", "bistecca alla fiorentina", Tuscan cheeses, bruschetta and other pizzas will delight the taste buds of the gourmands.
Finally, note that Montaione enjoys a pleasant Mediterranean climate during autumn and winter, while during the summer period the barometer can quickly rise to over 40°C in the shade. Also, to refresh yourself, nothing could be easier since Montaione is ideally located just one hour from the splendid city of Livorno and its immense beaches of fine sand.
