Located on a rocky peninsula off the coast of Valencia, Peñíscola attracts visitors from all over the world. Over the centuries, Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines and Arabs have taken up residence there, seduced by its mild climate and its colossal military fortress. These great civilizations have left Peñíscola a rich historical diversity, which can be found through the many monuments of the municipality.

On the highest heights of the city, the Templar Castle, listed as a historic monument in 1931, is a must visit in Peñíscola. Built by the Knights of the Temple on ancient Arab ruins, this architecture of exceptional solidity and simplicity was the residence of Benedict XIII, known as Pope Luna, who transformed it into a palace of the popes. This monument has been able to withstand the many attacks of which it emerged almost unchanged.

Extending the castle, the ramparts of the historical center bring us back to the Middle Ages. Today, there are three large gates to the fortress that bear witness to the different epochs it has passed through. Until the 18th century, Portal Fosc was its main entrance. In the Renaissance style, it bears the commemorative coat of arms of King Philip II. The second door was commissioned by Pope Luna in the 15th century to facilitate access to the sea from the center of the city. The last door, that of Santa Maria, was born in 1754 at the initiative of Ferdinand VI. It leads in particular to the picturesque square of the Escaseres and its neighboring walls.

Like many municipalities on the Valencian coast, Peñíscola holds a strong link with the sea, evidenced by the lighthouse of 1892 located at the exit of the castle. The Sea Museum tells its maritime history through three sections : an archaeological part which traces its marine origins, a second on the evolution of the fishing and a last on the diversity of the marine fauna.

Finally, the natural heritage of Peñíscola is not limited to its fishery riches, and there is as much to discover under the waves as on land. Indeed, many beaches and coves of beauty make it possible to bathe in the warm waters of the Mediterranean. Also : guided excursions through the swamps or the Serra d'Irta Natural Park to discover the local fauna and flora.
