Coast of the orange blossom, it is under this name that evokes the sun and summer that the coastline of the province of Castellón has made its reputation. Costa del Azahar has known a large number of populations, between Iberians, Phoenicians and Romans, but it is from Arabic that this delicious name comes from the flower cultivation throughout the Valencian Community. It is located on the natural park of the Sierra d'Irta and bordered by Huge peaks, beaches and coves contrast with the mountains in the distance and offer unique landscapes.
The tourist destination par excellence is Peñíscola, charming port city of the north of the coast. Perched on a rocky peninsula from which it takes its name, its geographical position (ideal for maritime commerce) has made it a veritable crossroads of civilizations. Iberians, Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines and Arabs stayed there before the Reconquest of the city (in 1233 by Charles the 1st called "The Conqueror") and left their traces on the urban heritage. The Castle of Peñíscola proudly overlooks the bay. Its colossal fortifications were built by the Templars, the impetuous knights of Christendom, between 1294 and 1307 on the ruins of an ancient Muslim palace. Its solid ramparts welcomed Pope Benedict XIII in the 15th century who resided there until his death. The beauty and prestige of the castle survive today when it is frequently used as a shooting location for period films and series. He served as a set for the very famous Game of Thrones during season six, during which he transformed himself into "City of Meereen".
Sunbathing enthusiasts will head towards Alcocéber, a small seaside resort nearby. Its ten kilometers of coastline are dotted with vast beaches of fine sand as well as several wild beaches that delight every summer many vacationers. To discover a small piece of history of the province, go to the ruins of the castle of Alcalà de Xivert which dominates the sea from its hill. Its architecture with Muslim and Christian influences is a fine example of the cultural richness of the coast.
The Costa del Azahar also has many festivities throughout the year that testify to the joie de vivre of its inhabitants. In 2010, the city of Burriana hosted the first edition of the Arenal Sound Festival, which has since gained international renown. In the magical setting of the Arenal beach, artists from all over the world perform each summer in front of an inflamed audience. The 2014 edition brought together the geniuses of alternative rock Placebo and the eccentric Die Antwoord, the one in 2015 honored the group of drum and bass Rudimental and the British rock of The Kooks. In short, there is something for everyone. This year, the festival continues its momentum and brings together on the same stage the Kaiser Chiefs, Kodaline, The Hives and Steve Aoki. Just that !
