To the north of the island of Gran Canaria, about fifteen kilometres from Las Palmas, the small village of Arucas is the third largest municipality on the island. In the heart of banana plantations, potato and millet fields, it is located at an altitude of 250 metres at the foot of a volcanic mountain from which it takes its name. As for heritage, Arucas is dominated by its imposing neo-Gothic parish church, the Iglesia de San Bautista: dating from the 19th century, entirely built in Arucas blue basalt, it is one of the city's landmarks, visible from each of its districts. Its columns, capitals, rosette and splendid stained glass windows make it the most popular monument in Arucas. Walking through the streets of this historic city, you will be marked by the contrasts of colours: the brown church stands out in the landscape dotted with white, red, green and yellow houses that are articulated around the religious building and Constitution Square. Take the time to stroll along its streets to visit the Tropical Garden of the Hesperides: with its beautiful 18th century mansion house in French neoclassical style (cocorico!), it proudly displays its hundreds of tall Australian palm trees, an impressive royal palm tree more than 30 metres high, a lake enamelled with water lilies and many other species of plants high in colour. The Maison de la Culture ("Casa de la Cultura", a 17th century Canary Island house), the municipal park, the residence and botanical garden of the Marquise d'Arucas, the quarry of "La Goleta", the Gourié residence and the Musée du Rhum are some of the municipality's highlights. The latter, in particular, occupies a special place in the visitors' holiday programme: celebrating the rum tradition, which is very important in Arucas, it houses an impressive cellar, one of the largest in Europe.

For a unique view of the whole city and a visit to the countryside, put on your sneakers for a hike towards the lookout point of the Arucas mountain: from this point located on the heights of the city, you can observe one of the most beautiful panoramas of the island on Arucas, but also on the whole of Gran Canaria. On the beach side, Arucas also has many treasures: the beach of San Andrés and the beach of Banaderos El Puertillo will be ideal for idleness breaks under the Spanish sun. Made of rocks and sand, they are perfect for swimming and family activities such as beach volleyball, but they also include surfing areas, for the pleasure of water sports enthusiasts.
