Centuries-old dwellings recognizable among a thousand, they wonderfully decorate its quays, its citadel and its entire village, giving it a marked character. For a perfect visit, head for the rue du Pilori, voted the most colourful street in all of Bayonne. With its splendid façades and original houses, it makes visitors passing through the Basque city crackle. The banks of the Nive are a must to do: of fascinating beauty, the river's emerald shimmering quays have delicious Venetian accents. On the Augustin Chaho quay side, half-timbered houses shape the panorama for a perfect postcard of Bayonne. The Corsairs and Gualperies quays are overlooked by magnificent noble residences with arcades, which we recommend you to visit day and night to appreciate both its street art and its lively evenings. A walking itinerary to recommend? The one on the ramparts, no doubt about it. Built to protect the town since Roman times, the guards and weapons of yesteryear have now given way to a vast area dedicated to walking and discovering Bayonne. Along the ramparts you will find many parks and other green spaces for young and old to enjoy a bucolic setting to stroll and play. Walking around Vauban's ramparts, it is impossible to miss the famous Spanish Gate: located in the south of the city since the foundation of its castrum in the 4th century, it was once the main gateway to neighbouring Spain. Bayonne is an open-air museum: from cobbled streets to small authentic shops, you will discover its most beautiful monuments, most of which are several centuries old. The Château Vieux, built on the remains of the ancient Roman castrum, but also the Château Neuf built by Charles VII after the Hundred Years War, as well as the Sainte-Marie Cathedral are the most visited sites in Bayonne. Dominating the whole of the Basque city from its two high spires pointing towards the blue sky, the Sainte-Marie cathedral is THE place to be when visiting Bayonne. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998, it was built between the 13th and 16th centuries, before being flanked by its two spires during the 19th century. In flamboyant Gothic style, this unmissable stage of the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela has fascinated believers and curious visitors for many centuries with its chapels decorated with splendid paintings, stained glass windows and its special atmosphere. Little advice: don't forget to visit its absolutely magnificent cloister, the largest in France, which invites you to calm and meditation. Also pass through the "Petit Bayonne" district, the arenas, and stroll through the Citadel, before learning to play Basque pelota.

The Basque Museum is a must-see: an essential part of your holiday, it will allow you to learn a little more about the history of the city and its region. For those with a sweet tooth, the Chocolate Academy is a must! The second greatest culinary speciality of Bayonne, chocolate can be enjoyed in all its forms. But what takes first place in the hearts of the Bayonnais is obviously his ham. Celebrated at the Bayonne Ham Fair in the spring, this delicatessen of character is to Bayonne what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris: in-di-sso-ciable! On toast, in a salad, in an omelette or on a pizza, there is always an occasion in Bayonne to eat its ham.

Finally, Bayonne is also the capital of festivities, thanks to its annual celebrations which welcome thousands of "festayres" dressed in white and red, and is the ideal place to discover the splendours of the Basque coast.
