Explore Aiguines
It is in the heart of the sumptuous gorges of the Verdon that is the village of Aiguines. Nestled in the north of the Var, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, Aiguines is a small typically Provençal commune coiled at the foot of the Grand Margès mountain, near the Sainte-Croix lake. Ideal location for a stay made of discoveries and sports activities in the heart of preserved landscapes, Aiguines is an ideal destination for a "green" holiday.
On the left bank of the Grand Canyon, in the heart of the Verdon, Aiguines will seduce you with its soothing and charming village. Articulating around the Place de la Fontaine, its pretty streets and tangled alleys made of pastel houses with terraces and vaulted steps lend themselves to strolling. The fountain, the village church and the 17th century castle are among the most interesting buildings in Aiguines. Although it is not open to the public, this Renaissance castle is worth a look, with its colourful tiles and round towers. After this visit, head towards the chapel of Saint-Pierre, where most visitors go to enjoy superb views overlooking Lake Sainte-Croix. Known for its traditional products such as lavender, truffles and honey, Aiguines is also famous for its woodturning activity as well as for its studded balls : the former production centre of petanque balls made of wood and nails, the town now houses a small museum, the "Musée de la Tournerie sur Bois", in which you can find some examples of these famous "studded balls" and discover more about their history and production.
Nestled in the heart of nature, both wild and grandiose, Aiguines offers its hiking enthusiasts a wide range of activities, which will allow you to discover every secret of the most beautiful sites around. Spreading over 21 kilometres of wonderful gorges, the Verdon is the ideal place for a multitude of activities. On the hiking side, follow the "Corniche Sublime" and stop at the Col d'Illoire belvedere to observe below the winding and emerald lace of the Verdon finish its race in the Sainte-Croix lake. At the level of the Belvedere des Cavaliers is the start of the Imbut hiking trail : along the bed of the Verdon, this 9 km hike is among the most magnificent in the region. Rather technical, this path will nevertheless offer you points of view with incommensurable beauty on the gorges of Verdon. On their side, holidaymakers in search of idleness can laze on the beaches of Lake St. Croix before doing a few refreshing fathoms in its calm turquoise waters, while the most sporty will have only the embarrassment of choice to occupy their afternoons under the Var sun : white water sports such as rafting and canyoning, canoeing, kayaking, boating, aqua trekking and rowing in the Verdon, windsurfing or pedal-boating on the lake... You can even learn to practice aerial sports such as paragliding over the gorges and the lake, for an unforgettable flight. Aiguines has also become over the years one of the favourite places for climbing enthusiasts, because of the many routes reserved for this practice throughout the city. Young and old will thus be able, in all seasons, to learn the joys of "climbing" in an absolutely superb setting. Fans of adrenaline and extreme sports will be able to enjoy the experience of bungee jumping from the Artuby bridge, the highest bridge in Europe perched 182 metres above sea level : thrills are guaranteed. Finally the Grand Margès is the scene of a multitude of hikes for young and old : culminating at 1577 meters, these peaks offer the courageous climbers breathtaking panoramas on the Plateau de Valensole (known for its perfumed lavender), the Grand Canyon and Lake Sainte-Croix. We advise you to take the GR 99 from Aiguines : this path will allow you a perfect discovery of the surroundings, during a walk of more than 5 hours through the surrounding massifs.
