In the valleys of the Montagne Bourbonnaise, very close to Vichy, the village of Ferrières-sur-Sichon takes place in the department of Allier. A quiet village, this land of history will delight nature lovers, wide open spaces and old stones, for a stay off the beaten track.

For a holiday in peace and quiet, in harmony with nature and above all far from traditional tourist destinations, there is nothing better than opting for a discovery of the French countryside. On the Allier side, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, it is Ferrières-sur-Sichon that catches our full attention. Located 25 kilometres south-east of Vichy, the village is a real invitation to a peaceful holiday. But Ferrières-sur-Sichon hides its game well! Established in the heart of the Montagne Bourbonnaise centuries ago, the village is home to many treasures to be discovered. If you don't want to miss anything, put on good trainers and climb on your bike, because here, there are many small paths that you can take for a change of scenery, either through the countryside or along the Sichon river that runs through the village. What to see? Le Pont du Moulin Neuf : built in 1910, this old railway bridge spans the ru Siamouzan by a large arch of 50 meters, and is reputed to be one of the most beautiful reinforced cement viaducts built at the time on the railway line that linked Cusset to Roanne through the Montagne Bourbonnaise. Now disused, it is a well-known hiking spot in the area and is on the route of many of the routes that will lead you to discover the Sichon valley. The other must-see for anyone visiting Ferrières-sur-Sichon is its castle. The Château de Montgilbert, that's its name, was built in 1250 before being badly damaged during the religious wars, then partly destroyed during the 19th century, its stones being used to build the houses of the village. If it is worth the detour, it is for the beauty of its very old architecture made of imposing towers and vaults, but also for the beautiful panoramas it offers from its promontory, perched at the top of a hill overlooking one of the meanders of the Vareille. In town, the wash-house is a perfect destination for a bucolic stroll, as are the old mill of the village and the Saint-Désir church, recognizable by its stocky and impressive architecture, which contrasts with its elegant interior decorations. The Château de Ferrières, the Rocher de Pierre Encise overlooking the Sichon, or the Grotte aux Fées (Fairy Cave) surrounded by legends will complete your visit to the village.

Finally, after having taken the time to push open the door of the Glozel Archaeological Museum which displays more than 2500 pieces of baked clay, bones and stones dating back to Prehistory, and to visit the Paul Barge Arboretum and the Bizin wood, head towards the village's lake. Housed in the heart of lush green nature, this one hectare lake is the ideal place for fishing. Decorated with tables and benches, it is a perfect site for a quiet lunch with a view, but also for hiking, meditation, yoga, jogging and contemplative parentheses.
