It is in the department of Allier, in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, that the town of Hérisson is located. Located on the meanders of the Aumance river, about fifteen kilometres from its confluence with the Cher, Hérisson is 25 kilometres north of Montluçon. In the heart of the Aumance valley, this small medieval town, a former stronghold of the Dukes of Bourbon, is nestled in the heart of a Natura 2000 listed site, thanks to the Aumance river which flows through the village, giving it a picturesque charm that history lovers love. Here, the streets are narrow, and the steep alleys tell the story of the village through their old stones. Still partially surrounded by large walls, the town boasts a dazzling heritage, which has earned it the title of Petite Cité de Caractère. Here, the ramparts are pierced by three fortified gates that once marked the entrance to the town, revealing to the visitor a historic heart full of houses of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries superb, as frozen in time. What to see? The bell tower Saint-Sauveur to the Place du Chapitre, the splendid church Saint-Pierre de Châteloy, the Gate of Gateuil and the Gate of Hell, without forgetting the inevitable remains of the feudal castle. Perched on its rocky spur, the Château de Hérisson, now in ruins, dominates the whole village and offers from its promontory a beautiful panorama over the town below and the Aumance. Our advice? After taking the time to admire the remains of this fortress, head for the banks of the river for a cool picnic or a bucolic stroll, which will allow you to discover the town in a different way to the sound of the murmuring water!

Hérisson has been a favourite with artists since the 19th century. Many filmmakers, novelists and painters have found inspiration here! Thus, Hérisson has been organizing for years now various music and theater festivals, folklore meetings, but also concerts, artists' residencies and exhibitions that attract many curious visitors to the area. Moreover, a whole bunch of itineraries among which the Sentier de l'Aumance or the Sentier des Crêtes will be perfect to discover Hérisson and the Bocage bourbonnais! Oh, and speaking of bourbon, whisky lovers should not miss a visit to Monsieur Balthazar's Distillery, which produces a 100% bourbonnais Hedgehog whisky renowned for its delicate aromas.
