In the beautiful region of Alsace, the Bas-Rhin offers a true condensed nature, history, traditions and well-being. Between its famous cities, its wine route, its world-renowned gastronomy, the department invites you to many discoveries.
Prefecture of the Bas-Rhin and European capital, Strasbourg is one of the must-see destinations for any stay in the department. While strolling through its streets, you can admire the superb Notre-Dame cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic art built between 1015 and 1439, the beautiful façade of the Kammerzell house and the Saint-Thomas church. Then stroll through the Petite France district to appreciate its beautiful half-timbered houses. Located on the Grande Île, it is a Unesco World Heritage Site and offers visitors a very pleasant walk along the canals. But also discover the other cities of the department such as Haguenau (Wissembourg gate, Grenier Saint-Georges), Schiltigheim (rose garden, Art Nouveau houses), Illkirch-Graffenstaden (Saint-Symphorien church, old orangery)...
Then go and discover the department by taking the famous Alsace Wine Route. From village to village, it will lead you from Marlenheim to Orschwiller, for its lower Rhine part. It will allow you to enjoy beautiful landscapes while tasting great wines in the heart of the wine estates. On the way, take the time to visit some typical Alsatian towns and villages. In Obernai, admire a fabulous heritage: ramparts, belfry, Saints Pierre-et-Paul church, wheat market, Sainte-Odile fountain... In Molsheim, fall under the charm of the church and the Jesuits' park, the old chartreuse and the blacksmiths' gate... And, in the south of the department, go and see the fabulous Haut-Koenigsbourg castle perched on an impressive hill.
Between the Rhine valley and the Vosges mountains, the Bas-Rhin also has a variety of natural environments that encourage outdoor activities. On foot, take the many trails that crisscross the department, such as the Casemates trail in Boofzheim. By bike, discover the Bruche canal cycle route, near Saales, or the Rhône-Rhin canal cycle route. In winter, put on your skis or snowshoes and enjoy the snow in the ski resort and Nordic area of Champ du Feu. And, in all seasons, treat yourself to some gourmet breaks to taste the local specialties: baeckoeffe, coq au riesling, sauerkraut, flammekueche, munster, kouglof...
