A real "city in the countryside", Bayeux is located in the heart of the Calvados department, in the Normandy region. A medieval city spared by the 1944 bombardments, it was, during that summer, the capital of France. Rich in an impressive architectural heritage, Bayeux is made up of small winding alleys, cobbled paths, cosy bourgeois homes, old half-timbered houses and monuments dating back to the Middle Ages, giving it an unusual elegance and a quiet side adored by its visitors. Take the time to linger in its historic sector, called the Old Bayeux, to discover its famous Notre-Dame cathedral: inaugurated by William the Conqueror (Duke of Normandy and King of England) in 1077, this jewel of Norman architecture is one of the most visited buildings in Normandy. Inspired by both Romanesque and Gothic art at her bedside, she impresses visitors with the splendour of her decorations, both exterior and interior. Its crypt, very high nave, Gothic columns, Romanesque arcades decorated with medieval motifs, sculpted foot, wall paintings, imposing copper dome and small cottage perched at the top of the North Tower make it an absolutely unique place. It also owes its fame to the legend that Bishop Odon de Conteville had the Bayeux Tapestry embroidered to decorate his nave. Transition all found for the continuation of your bajocasse walk, direction the Museum of the Tapestry of Bayeux to see there the legendary tapestry registered in the register "Memory of the World" of UNESCO. Telling the different battles and other events of the conquest of England by William the Conqueror in 58 scenes, counting 202 horses and 626 characters, this historical embroidery is one of the most precious treasures of Norman heritage. But Bayeux's historical heritage is also discreet; in the sandstone of an alleyway, you will cross paths with an old mailbox, gargoyles, fountains decorated with lions, medieval sculptures and amazing engravings. Embroidery therefore, but also lace and porcelain make Bayeux's reputation throughout the world. Also, we can only recommend that you visit the "MAHB", the Baron Gérard Museum of Art and History, which honours local art and crafts, or the Conservatoire de la dentelle, whose stated objective is to preserve and share this know-how dating back over 300 years.

Envious of going for a walk in the countryside? So follow the Aure, which crosses the city: from the banks of the river, you will discover splendid weeping willows, but also old stone bridges, mills, washhouses and waterfront houses typical of local architecture. The Botanical Garden is also worth a visit, for its discovery trails and its magnificent weeping beech tree, classified "Arbre remarquable de France", which will impress young and old alike.

In another respect, Bayeux is also known for its proximity to the D-Day Beaches. In the heart of the city, the Memorial Museum of the Battle of Normandy is to be built: with many period objects and materials, it retraces through thematic spaces the chronology of the various events that made Bayeux the first city liberated in France in the early morning of 7 June 1944. To walk in the footsteps of history, towards Juno, Gold, Utah, Omaha and Sword Beach, the 5 beaches of the "D-Day" where more than 150,000 Allied soldiers have landed.

Finally, take advantage of Bayeux's proximity to the sea to swim on the beaches of the Normandy coast: at Arromanches-les-Bains, Longues-sur-Mer or Port-en-Bessin-Huppain, you can take a break and relax, swim or practice a wide range of water sports, from surfing to paddle, including sand yachting, diving, longe-côte, kitesurfing or sailing, as you wish.
