Thirty kilometres south-east of Bergerac, Beaumont-du-Périgord is one of the most beautiful bastides in the Dordogne. Picturesque and rich in a strong historical capital, this green destination will satisfy your desires for culture and the outdoors.

The first English bastide founded in 1272 by King Edward I of England, Beaumont-du-Périgord is located in the heart of hilly landscapes as only the Dordogne seems to jealously guard the secret. In very good condition, this original country house has kept 16 fortified gates from its rich past, including the Luzier gate (12th century) through which you will have to pass to enter its village. Unlike the other bastides, built on a quadrangular plan, Beaumont-du-Périgord was built in the shape of an H, in honour of Henri III, father of Edward I. You will not be able to pass by the village's fortified church, the Saint-Laurent-et-Saint-Front church. Very imposing and visible from almost everywhere in the town with its two dungeons, its loopholes and its guard tower, it dominates the whole of Beaumont-du-Périgord from its high perched bell tower, and is really worth a visit for the beauty of its many stained glass windows. Opposite this English Gothic style church, you will find the central square of the village: it is there that you can observe some of the most beautiful houses and shops in the town, housed under splendid arcades. Go through rue Foussal, rue Romieu (which form the two arms of the "H"), rue Féliciane or rue Poutarnel, to admire old residences decorated with coloured roses. Then stop under the Place de la Halle to attend the market, and stroll around the splendid 15th century Chambard House, the majestic Château de Bannes, the Maison Lafitte (superb with its half-timbering) and the Maison de Monsec. If the visit of these cobbled alleys is worth the daytime, we also advise you to opt for a night visit: during the summer period, several torchlight rides are organised, for a total immersion in the Beaumont of yesteryear, with as a bonus concerts of medieval music, troubadour songs and knight fights.

Sportsmen? You will not be outdone since Beaumont-du-Périgord is criss-crossed by numerous signposted routes, most of which start from the church side. You will find several marked loops from 3 to 27 kilometres crossing the GR6 and the GR de Pays (the Bois de Penlaud loop, the Belpech loop, the Grand Mayme loop and the Bannes loop), as well as an old pilgrimage path, a variant of the Santiago de Compostela path that links La Réole to Rocamadour. In addition to nearly a hundred kilometres of hiking trails, you will find a whole host of trails for mountain biking or horseback riding, to vary the pleasures.
