It is in the heart of the Périgord-Limousin Natural Park that the town of Nontron is located. Capital of the Périgord Vert, Nontron is located in the Dordogne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Equidistant from Angoulême, Périgueux and Limoges, this land of granite and limestone, ponds and rivers, Nontron blossoms between woods and greenery in the heart of a region particularly conducive to outdoor activities. Ideally located to allow you to discover some of the region's most important tourist sites such as the Château de Puyguilhem, Saint-Jean-de-Côle Varaignes or the Villars caves, Nontron is located on the banks of the Bandiat river. Organized in terraces, the city reveals to the visitors several levels, dominated by old ramparts of the XIIIth century. Climb the old stairs that outline the town to discover its limestone walls so emblematic of the region, houses with tiled roofs that contrast with the surrounding vegetation. What to see? The 18th and 14th century castle: listed as a historical monument, the castle of Nontron is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful sites in the city. But it is not the only one worth a visit, the 15th century Château de la Mothe or the 17th century Château de la Francherie are also not to be missed. The Azat residence, the Notre-Dame-des-Ronces church, or the Jardin des Arts will complete your visit.
A little free time for a cultural interlude? Go to the Pôle Expérimental des Métiers d'Art! This center is home to a number of artists and craftsmen from the Nontron area. It houses an exhibition hall and will allow you to immerse yourself in the heart of the art made in Nontron. But Nontron is especially famous for its cutlery tradition! Dating back to the 15th century, the cutlery tradition is to Nontron what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris! In addition to discovering this ancestral know-how, in stores or during the Knife Festival which is held every summer, it will be the occasion to bring back in your luggage a small souvenir of this stay in the Green Perigord!
On foot or by bike, by car or on horseback, the Nontron area is particularly appreciated by hikers. Also, other places in the area are worth a visit: the Château d'Aucors, the Château de Beauvais, the Château de Bellussière, the Grotte de Tourtoirac, Périgueux and the legendary Grottes de Lascaux will be added to your list of visits.
