Capital of the Périgord Noir, renowned for its medieval architecture, Sarlat-la-Canéda is one of the highlights of your holiday in the Dordogne. Ville d'Art is a city of history nestled in the heart of the Causses du Quercy, the one more commonly known as Sarlat is considered one of the most beautiful cities in France and can boast no less than 66 listed monuments. Festive, dynamic and exotic, Sarlat is also the perfect place to discover the most beautiful pearls of the Vénère and Dordogne valleys.
Sarlat-la-Canéda, a small medieval city with lauze roofs, is the capital of the Dordogne department and is the focus of many of its festivities. Organized around its immense Carolingian Benedictine abbey, Sarlat is distinguished by its streets adorned with magnificent 15th and 16th century private mansions, as well as by its countless listed monuments. As you stroll along its intertwined streets, more than a thousand years of architecture will unfold before your eyes to the rhythm of the blond stones that make the reputation of the town. On the side of the Place du Marché aux Oies, the Manoir de Gisson is one of the most beautiful buildings in the town: built during the 17th century, this medieval bourgeois mansion bears witness to Sarlat's prosperity over the centuries. Beautifully restored, it has kept all its splendour and is an important stopover in your visit to the town. For a unique panoramic view of the city, we advise you to go to rue des Consuls to take the panoramic lift located in the heart of the bell tower of Sainte-Marie church to discover a 360° panoramic view of Sarlat. Once back on land, visit Place de Peyrou, Hôtel de la Boétie, or the magnificent rue des Consuls and Place de la Liberté, birthplace of Étienne de la Boétie. Many are the castles that dot the Sarlat landscape and the town of Sarlat-la-Canéda: the ruins of the episcopal castle of Teminiac, the castle of Campagnac, and the castle of Boétie are to be seen absolutely, as are the Saint-Sacerdos cathedral, the Saint-Bernard tower and the Hôtel Plamon, so many architectural wonders among others that the city shelters.
As for excursions, the Périgord Noir offers a wide choice of hiking, cycling and horseback riding. The Dordogne Valley in particular is an ideal place for outdoor activities such as horseback riding, trekking, fishing, mountain biking, caving, climbing, canoeing and canyoning. Through Sarlat and its surroundings, you will find many hiking routes suitable for all levels, from 1.6 to 17 kilometres and more for the most sporty holidaymakers. With the family, we advise you to take the Sarlat-Cazoulès greenway in particular, perfect for cycling, rollerblading, Nordic walking or running to the rhythm of sublime landscapes. Beynac-et-Cazenac and La Roque-Gageac (less than 30 minutes from Sarlat) are two superb destinations classified as "Most Beautiful Villages in France": don't miss visiting them, and take the opportunity to board a gabare to discover the beauty of the Dordogne river which flows through magnificent villages.
If Sarlat's reputation is well known in terms of architecture, the town is also renowned for its Périgord flavours, adored by the finest gourmets. The Sarlat market (Saturday and Wednesday) is a must during your visit, where craftsmen, gourmands and demanding palates meet to celebrate the colours of local gastronomy. On the menu? Nothing very "dietetic", but only fresh, generous and tasty products. Ceps, chanterelles, morels, strawberries, cabécou, Tourain, enchaud, walnuts and chestnuts rub shoulders with mythical products such as truffles and foie gras, as well as confits, delicatessen meats, liqueurs from local production and brandy stalls. A fat and truffle market is also held from late November to mid-March on Place Boissarie, and several festivals throughout the year celebrate local flavours, such as the Truffle Festival in mid-January, "Sarlat Fest'Oie" in March, the Taste and Gastronomy Days in September, the Christmas market and the Journées du Terroir.
Finally, take advantage of your visit in the region to visit Montignac and its Lascaux cave, the Eyrignac gardens, the Château des Milandes in Castelnaud, the Proumeyssac abyss in Audrix, Maquay and its Château de Puymartin, the Grotte de Domme and the magnificent Château de Fénelon.

we visited Domme, Sarlat and La Roque Gageac, all of which were beautiful. Be warned though, it's very touristy, and you'll have to pay for parking. But the villages are so beautiful
