Halfway between Périgueux and Brive-la-Gaillarde, the elegant village of Thenon blossoms in the heart of the Périgord Noir, just a short distance from the Vézère river which draws the contours of its neighbouring valleys. Between culture, nature and discoveries, to visit Thenon is to embark on a relaxing and fulfilling stay, far from the hustle and bustle of the big cities.

Perched on its hilltop at an altitude of 285 metres, the village of Thenon is watered by the Laurence and Manoire rivers which trace its contours. Occupied since Prehistory, Thenon shelters on its lands several paleolithic and gallo-roman deposits. Its village, 268 metres high, is an ancient defensive castrum, as evidenced by the large square tower that you can discover while strolling by the village church. Here, the list of sites to see is long, so put on some good sneakers and let's go for a walk! To start, nothing better than to go through the Rue des Arts et des Saveurs. Emblematic of the town, it brings together in one place artists, creators, producers and craftsmen who gladly open their workshops, shops and galleries to passing visitors. Every Tuesday, the traditional market located under the Halle is a must to do, with its stalls of local produce and musical atmosphere that will set the tone for your holiday in Thenon. What's next? The Château de Thenon, part of the keep and the surrounding wall can be visited, not forgetting the 12th century church of Saint-Martial which delights lovers of old stones and architecture thanks to its nave in the shape of a Latin cross, its triumphal arch and its Carrara marble altar.

Thenon is also and above all a green destination. Below the village, the Etang de Thenon pond is the ideal place to bubble in peace and quiet under the beautiful sun that generously waters the Dordogne valleys. If the fishermen will find their happiness there, the amateurs of hikes and breaks with their feet in the water will also be able to blossom there. When the weather is fine, stop off at the guinguette de l'étang: a place for meetings and exchanges, it lends itself wonderfully to a gourmet break at the foot of the lake while listening to music. Hikers will find many walking routes in Thenon, as well as cyclists who will be able to revel in fairly sporty loops, such as the 31.6 kilometre "Boucle d'Ajat" which will take you through Thenon and the neighbouring town of Ajat. On foot or by bike, the Grotte de Rouffignac 20 kilometres away is a must, as is the Grotte de Lascaux located barely 15 kilometres from the heart of Thenon. The Parc du Thot and its playful animations (wolf feeding, fire lighting demonstration, discovery of caves, prehistoric animals...), as well as the accrobranche park "l'Appel de la Forêt" are added to your list of visits to do. The latter, located in the commune of Thenon itself, is one of the favourite attractions for families on holiday in the area. A sports leisure park, in the heart of a superb shady forest, it has 11 acrobatic courses with more than 50 zip lines that will delight young and old alike.
