Located only 2 hours by train from Paris, Bordeaux is one of the must-see destinations for anyone wishing to discover the most beautiful cities in France. Capital of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and only 50 kilometers from the Atlantic coast, Bordeaux, surprising and captivating, owes its reputation to its culture, its wines, its gastronomy, its architecture (with more than 350 buildings classified as historical monuments) and its dynamic and attractive living environment.
Bordeaux is a jewel of the 18th century, a city of Art and History and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the cities in France with the most beautiful built heritage. Designed by centuries of history, it alternates traditional shops, magnificent gardens, plush buildings and more modern constructions. The ideal way to visit Bordeaux is to stroll along its streets and along the banks of the Garonne River on foot or by bicycle, to take the time to admire all its hidden charms. Dating back to the Age of Enlightenment, the lively Place de la Comédie is one of the highlights of Bordeaux. With its neo-classical Grand-Theatre decorated with Corinthian columns (also known as the Bordeaux Opera House), it is the ideal place for cultural outings. As the focal point of the city, we advise you to stop there for a coffee on the terrace with a canelé, in order to take the pulse of Bordeaux and to soak up its friendly atmosphere on a sweet note. Then take the Allées Tourny, to discover the beautiful 18th century facades that dot this landscaped promenade full of chic cafés and elegant brasseries. After having photographed its wooden carousel, head for the Place de la Bourse, which is also one of the city's must-sees: with its Three Graces fountain representing the three daughters of Zeus, its palace and its Water Mirror, it is one of the most visited places in Bordeaux. Designed during the renovation of the quays in the mid-2000s, this Water Mirror - one of the largest in Europe - is to Bordeaux what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris. Adored by the Bordeaux inhabitants who come to cool off, it takes on the air of an immense paddling pool as soon as the first heat arrives.
Bordeaux is also marked by the seal of medieval history: the Saint-André cathedral is one of the most beautiful witnesses of this distant era. With its gothic choir and its Renaissance organs, it was the place of marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine in 1137 and of Anne of Austria in 1615. Not far from there, the Cailhau gate, 35 meters high, was once part of the walls of Bordeaux. Under its oak frame, its panorama on the quays and the Pont de Pierre is not to be missed under any pretext, especially at sunset, when the view is particularly magnificent. Then take the 230 steps of the spiral staircase of the Pey Berland tower to enjoy its unobstructed view on the bell towers and the roofs of Bordeaux, and go back down to stroll in the Sainte-Catherine street. Connecting the Place de la Victoire to the Place de la Comédie, the Rue Sainte-Catherine is one of the favorite arteries of tourists because of its many stores of all kinds. With its 1250 meters, it is the longest pedestrian shopping street in Europe.
The Quinconces esplanade is the largest square in France with its 12 hectares. The pride of Bordeaux decorated with the magnificent Monument to the Girondins, you can also see two imposing rostral columns of Neo-classical style. A key place of local entertainment, it is the scene of many celebrations such as the River Festival, the Antiques Fair, the Pleasure Fair, the Wine Festival, but it also hosts concerts, sports celebrations and circuses.
It is well known that in Bordeaux, the temperature can rise very quickly during the summer period: we advise you to take a walk along the banks of the Garonne for a cool break. The area is ideal for bike, scooter or rollerblade rides, but also for a refreshing break and a picnic by the water. The more athletic will be delighted to know that through the parks, the public garden, the botanical garden, the green spaces and the quays of Bordeaux, there are nearly 160 kilometers of marked trails for walkers of all levels (through Bordeaux and its surroundings), as well as more than 200 kilometers of bicycle paths.
Cultural capital, Bordeaux is full of museums for all tastes: Aquitaine Museum, Fine Arts Museum, Customs Museum, Decorative Arts Museum, Natural History Museum, Contemporary Art Museum... But the strength of Bordeaux is its wine. With more than 120 000 hectares of vineyards, the Gironde is one of the most wine-producing departments in France. How to evoke Bordeaux without talking about its Port of the Moon? Undeniably turned towards the sea, Bordeaux was once one of the main ports in Europe. Today, its port is the starting point for many boat trips along the meandering Garonne River. Note that a cruise on the Garonne (besides being pleasant!) is one of the best ways to discover the richness of the local heritage, from its vineyards to its beaches along the Gironde estuary.
Finally, some ideas of other sites to see during your stay in Bordeaux: the Place des Grands Hommes and its glass roofed market, the crypt of the Saint-Seurin basilica, the Utopia (a cinema set up in a former church), the Cité du Vin on the banks of the Garonne, the Grosse Cloche (belfry of the former city hall), the Romanesque Sainte-Croix church, the village of Saint-Emilion (40 minutes away), the Chartrons district and its ancient architecture, the Bastide district and its botanical garden on the right bank, without forgetting the Darwin district, a trendy and organic place, a meeting place for the youth of Bordeaux.
