It is in the south-west of Basse-Terre, in Guadeloupe, that the commune of Vieux-Habitants is located. Founded in the 17th century, it is, as its name indicates, the oldest commune in Guadeloupe! A top quality of life, breathtaking landscapes, an authentic side and traditions perpetuated for years make this destination the perfect place to put your suitcases during a stay in Guadeloupe.

On the Côte-sous-le-Vent, not far from Bouillante, Baillif and Saint-Claude, Vieux-Habitants is an unavoidable destination in Guadeloupe. Spread over nearly 60 square kilometers, the town enjoys a tropical climate and is crossed by the Grande Rivière des Vieux-Habitants, the Rivière Beaugendre and is bounded to the south by the Rivière du Plessis. Rich of a very ancient history, its origins go back to remote times, as attested by the prehistoric site of Roches Gravées du Plessis. In the heart of the river, this site gathers near a waterfall 19 splendid engraved rocks, actual witnesses of populations settled in Vieux-Habitants centuries ago. In the past, the commune was mainly dedicated to the cultivation of coffee and vanilla, but it has kept its authenticity, which attracts visitors from all over the world.

Hikers ? This is the place for you. You will find in Vieux-Habitants a whole range of walking itineraries that will lead you through the National Park of Guadeloupe, its forest, or towards the Pitons of Bouillante. Also called the "Sauts de Bouillante", these summits are a place of predilection for beautiful sports and contemplative walks, which will allow you to admire from their summit at 1088 meters of altitude, a 360° panorama on the valleys which surround Vieux-Habitants and on the sea. Moreover, the Soufrière is located only a few blocks from the village, you can enjoy routes leading you to it, for magnificent walks in the heart of authentic Guadeloupe. In addition to hiking, the commune of Vieux-Habitants attracts visitors for the many activities it offers throughout the year: visit of the oldest church of the island (Saint-Joseph church), banana or vanilla plantations (such as the Vanibel estate), coffee plantations such as the Habitation de la Grivelière and Café Chaulet... And sports, such as canyoning in its rivers, swimming on the coast of the Indigoterie de l'Anse à la Barque, or scuba diving... Enough to conquer the heart of the whole family! As for the beaches, the very wild beach of the pond, the beach of Simaho (which is worth the detour for its Creole restaurants!) or the beach of Rocroy, famous for its sea beds and its carpets, are all beaches that will be perfect for beautiful idle moments under the sun. Just imagine: turquoise water, beautiful black pebble beaches, coconut trees under which to find a little shade to read in peace... There are worse conditions for a vacation in the sun, right?
