What if for your holidays, you embarked on a stroll in the heart of the Auvergne? A few steps from the Allier, in the Haute-Loire department, Lavaudieu, classified as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France", is one of those destinations that deserve to be better known. Between history, heritage, green outings and cultural discoveries, Lavaudieu is definitely the ideal place for a change of scenery, nestled in a green setting.

The village of Lavaudieu is located on the banks of the Senouire river, just a short distance from Brioude, in the Haute-Loire. Here, life is organized around an old Benedictine abbey, founded during the 11th century, and the village reveals to its lucky visitors a warm and welcoming face, where old houses and flowery banks offer a bucolic setting where you like to take your time. And you will need time to discover Lavaudieu, classified "Most Beautiful Villages in France"! Our advice is to go for a stroll as soon as the sun rises, to take advantage of the warm light that caresses the old stone houses in the heart of the village. The charm of Lavaudieu lies in its old streets, medieval alleys studded with traditional houses and winegrower's houses with golden stones and round tiles which give the village a great cachet, highlighting the authenticity of rural life. The star of the village, previously mentioned, is its abbey Saint-André de Lavaudieu: founded in 1057 by Saint-Robert, the founder of La Chaise-Dieu, this abbey has hosted Benedictine monks until the Revolution. If it is worth a visit for its architecture, its refectory with Byzantine-inspired paintings, its old church decorated with murals from the Italian School (14th century) and its views over the town, it is undeniably for its cloister that it is so highly prized. Unique in Auvergne, this absolutely magnificent masterpiece offers a meditative and contemplative interlude to its visitors, and is a must for anyone visiting Lavaudieu. From the outside of the building, you can also distinguish its bell tower, truncated during the Revolution, which now sports a pike and a Phrygian cap at its top.

Visiting Lavaudieu is also an opportunity to discover the charms of the South Auvergne, its countryside and its villages, such as Brioude, elected "Most Beautiful Detour of France", or Blesle, elected to the "Most Beautiful Villages of France". The Allier river and its banks are perfect for hiking, mountain biking and water sports, and Le Puy-en-Velay, about 50 minutes away, is also worth a visit. Gourmet, cultural, sporty and so welcoming, the town of Le Puy-en-Velay, famous for its architecture and its famous Green Lentils from Le Puy, will be the icing on the cake of your holidays in Auvergne.
