Ah, Saint-Paulien... A little jewel well hidden in the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Saint-Paulien is located in the Haute-Loire department, a dozen kilometres north of Le Puy-en-Velay. At the foot of the Auvergne volcanoes, this destination, which is now adored by green tourism enthusiasts, has managed to preserve the intimate atmosphere that suits it so well. Situated at an altitude of over 800 metres, the village has a rich and ancient history, as evidenced by the presence of geological remains found on its land which date its creation to the prehistoric period. Authentic and full of charm, this village is renowned for the astonishing beauty of its architectural and historical heritage, which you can easily discover by walking through its ancient streets. What to see? The 12th century church of Saint-Georges, built largely in the Auvergne Romanesque style in ashlar, with grey, white, black, pink and mauve stones. During your excursions, it is impossible not to pass by the Saint-Joseph chapel, listed as a Historic Monument, or the Chabron de Soleilhac house located on the Saint-Georges beach. But if there is a building that makes visitors dream of passing through Saint-Paulien, it is the Château de la Rochelambert. A very imposing 11th century residence, carved into a basalt cliff (the remains of an ancient Auvergne volcano), this absolutely magnificent building seems to have come out of a fairy tale. Surrounded by an abundant vegetation, this castle worthy of the most beautiful postcards impresses by the beauty of its architecture: pointed towers, machicolations, guardrooms, and monumental staircase which replaces an old drawbridge make this small jewel of architecture an essential part of your visit. Open to the public, it has notably welcomed George Sand and the shooting of several films, including "Beauty and the Beast" by Jean Cocteau. To complete your discovery of Saint-Paulien, do not miss a detour to the Michel-Pomarat Museum, an exhibition space that brings together many Gallo-Roman remains found on the territory of the town during archaeological excavations.

Saint-Paulien is a land of discoveries, perfect for hiking thanks to a number of marked trails, and also invites you to relax.
