Bathed in sunshine, Lattes is one of those small destinations typical of the Hérault. Situated a stone's throw from the beaches, on the edge of the Etang du Méjean, Montpellier and Palavas-les-Flots, the town is ideally situated to take advantage of city excursions as well as greener outings.
Cut in its middle by the waters of the Lez, Lattes has a history closely linked to that of water. Its very ancient origins make it a city with a marked and splendid heritage, which you can discover during your walks. Local pride, the Lattara Archaeological Site - Henri Prades Museum is a must to discover the history of the village. Founded during the 6th century, "Lattara" was once a major trading port in the region; during this visit you will be able to discover the town's entire ancient history, thanks to its glass factory and collections of objects found on site during excavations carried out over the last 50 years. After this small cultural point, head for the heart of Lattes: particularly pleasant and well laid out thanks to a network of cycle paths, the town centre is ideal for family excursions. As far as visits are concerned, Saint-Laurent Church is a must for anyone who visits this sunny little corner. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, this Romanesque building is worth a visit for the beauty of its 17th century nave. Built in a distinctive style, it stands out for its large tile roof and ashlar architecture. Then we head for the Port Ariane district, which is certainly the most pleasant: located around the marina, it invites you to stroll along with the clattering of moored boats, and lives to the rhythm of the comings and goings of the sailing boats. It is also a privileged place to enjoy a drink on the terrace or a good meal in front of the river. Because that's what holidays are all about too: taking some time for yourself, and taking the time to savour the delights of the local gastronomy. Feel like a light meal before enjoying water sports by the sea? A little mussel brew should do the trick. On the contrary, you are hungry and dream of having a treat before a digestive nap in the shade of a parasol? What would you say to macaroni, Sète bourride, fish soup, mussels au gratin with pélardon, delicious Sète tielle, fougasse with chips or even Languedoc chichoumeille? Chances are that small vegetables in olive oil and freshly caught fish will delight the taste buds of the whole family.
After strolling along the banks of the Lez on foot, bicycle or rollerblades, it is impossible not to visit the wonderful protected natural site of the Méjean. At the heart of a vast Languedoc lagoon complex, this area between land and lake is known for its varied and abundant flora and fauna: here, pink flamingos, white storks, horses and bulls live quietly in the heart of the reed beds that line this vast reservoir of biodiversity.
The other advantage of Lattes is its immediate proximity to the beaches of the Mediterranean. Feel like diving into the Big Blue? Set course for Palavas-les-Flots. Although they are particularly well equipped for children thanks to numerous infrastructures on the seaside and on the sand, the beaches of the seaside resort are also favourable to the practice of sports activities ranging from soccer to beach tennis and beach volleyball, not to mention water sports. In addition to swimming, you can opt for an introduction to scuba diving, jet-skiing, a kitesurfing course, a surfing session, towed buoy, canoe, sea kayak, paddle, sail, flyfish, parasailing, speed boat and flyboard... Enough to satisfy the most fond of sensations as well as the lovers of quiet gliding!
