Explore Aureilhan
It is on the banks of a protected lake, only 4 kilometres from Mimizan, that the village of Aureilhan lies. A dream destination for holidaymakers in search of nature and disconnection, Aureilhan is a real bubble of sweetness and greenery, right in the heart of the Landes.
The exceptional setting of this site sparkles thanks to the lake of Aureilhan-Mimizan as well as the abundant vegetation which surrounds it. Equipped for water sports and leisure activities, you can practice many activities. Fishing enthusiasts with family or friends can take advantage of the pontoon on the lake to bait some fish in the early morning. Witness to local history, this pontoon was built by the Duke of Westminster to access his castle, located on the other side of the lake. You can also observe "W's" (for Westminster and Woolsack), engraved on the different ramps of the pontoon. Built in 1911, Woolsack Castle is a former hunting lodge, listed as a Historic Monument since 1978. Imposing and impressive in its sublime architecture, it is said that it was the refuge of many socialites, from Charlie Chaplin to Coco Chanel, passing through the King of Spain Alfonso XIII, Salvador Dali and Winston Churchill, who found inspiration to paint there. If this haven of peace in the shade of the trees cannot be visited, you can always try to approach it by walking on the banks of the lake, or from a small boat, in order to observe it more closely.
The town of Aureilhan is also worth a visit : the Sainte Ruffine church in Aureilhan is one of the most visited buildings. Remarkable for its Romanesque style, it is famous throughout the region for its miraculous Saint Ruffine fountain, which is said to have "healing" properties.
In terms of sporting activities, you will not be disappointed : windsurfing, paddle, catamaran, canoe, canoe and pedal boat will be at the rendezvous of your afternoons under the Landes sun. Fans of thrills can even learn to surf, a true religion in the Landes region ! For that, you will have to go on the beaches of Mimizan, to perhaps succeed in taming the sometimes tumultuous waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
Aureilhan is a breathtaking scenery and an ideal destination for hikers. The lake and its surroundings are totally equipped with hiking, cycling and horse riding trails : this way, you will have many times during your stay, the opportunity to discover the flora and the superb panoramas of this small corner of paradise. For a romantic and original walk, think of the boat trip all around the lake : from the water, you will be able to seize magnificent points of view on the surrounding banks.
During the summer, let yourself go to long afternoons of idleness on the lake beach, arranged and supervised. After a few fathoms, take time to relax, or read a good book in a particularly soothing setting. If you have forgotten to slip some reading material into your suitcases, don't panic : behind the town hall of Aureilhan, there is a self-service library where you can borrow free books from the sun.
Finally, every Saturday evening, in July and August, country meals are organized by the lake : it is the ideal occasion to meet the inhabitants of Aureilhan, to discover their culture and their traditions, especially gastronomic ! On your menu: Landes poultry, foie gras, eels, sea bream, asparagus, kiwi landais and local wines will delight the taste buds of gourmands. To end the evening in beauty, a musical evening will allow you to prolong this moment of sharing in full nature. Those who would like to feast until the early morning will head to Mimizan, where the discotheque "Le Mambo" and a casino will allow them to enjoy the atmosphere of Landes evenings.
