For an authentic, exotic and peaceful holiday, how about a little getaway in Lozere? A gourmet, picturesque destination, far from the traditional tourist itineraries, Le Fau-de-Peyre seems to be the perfect place for a holiday off the beaten track. Let's go!
Now attached to Peyre-en-Aubrac, the commune of Fau-de-Peyre is situated on the borders of the famous basalt plateaus of Aubrac and the granite mounts of Margeride. In the north-west of Lozère, about 50 minutes from Séverac-le-Château, 45 kilometres from Mende and 90 kilometres from Puy-en-Velay, this authentic village looks as if lost between green meadows and thick woods. With 190 inhabitants spread over its 26.72 square kilometres, scattered in 17 villages and hamlets, Le Fau-de-Peyre is, it can be said, resolutely a quiet place. The beauty of the countryside is what makes it so attractive: well-preserved, rich in abundant flora and preserved fauna, the hectares of beech and pine forests that dot the village are particularly popular with hikers, who come here to enjoy a quiet stroll, but also to picnic and pick mushrooms when the season permits. Drawn by the course of the Rimeize river, the landscapes of Fau-de-Peyre are also marked out by hiking trails, among which the GR de Pays "Tour des Monts d'Aubrac" which will take you over several days between Aveyron, Cantal and Lozère, without forgetting the "Pays d'Aumont-Aubrac" short hiking trails which will allow you to discover the small wooded mountains of the Margueride and the wind-exposed plateaux of the Aubrac mountains, particularly via the trails of Santiago de Compostela. The PR14 "Le Pont de las Fédes" (13 kilometres) or the PR15 "Les Moulins de Beauregard" (12 kilometres) start from Le Fau-de-Peyre, and are particularly recommended to allow you to contemplate all their beauty.
The other flagship activity here after the hike? Fishing! A sub-tributary of the Garonne, the Rimeize is well known in the area for its fario trout, which swim en masse in the river. Thanks to a fishing route of more than 12 kilometres, many tourists come to try their luck under the Lozerian sun!
On the town side, Le Fau-de-Peyre has a beautiful heritage that we invite you to discover. Its church in particular, is one of its most beautiful buildings: recognizable thanks to its combed bell tower, it is worth the detour for its Romanesque vaults and the beauty of its interior architecture. Destroyed in 1963, the Château de Fau-de-Peyre was once its noblest building: built in the 17th century, only a few stones remain today around its site. If there is one place that young and old alike will undoubtedly love, it is the Scarecrow Farm. A dreamlike creation, as if out of time, this amazing museum will allow you to discover modules and other poetic, colourful and surprising works, for a visit that will not fail to surprise you. Finally, Gévaudan and its famous Beast, the site of the Roc de Peyre and its breathtaking panorama of the surrounding valleys, the Graniboules mills, the Roc de l'Hermet and the Aubrac Regional Nature Park will complete your stay in the Fau-de-Peyre!
