In the department of Manche, in Normandy, Saint-Marcouf takes place along a coastline marked by the history of the Normandy landings in June 1944. A land of history, culture but also nature, this small town is perfect for a relaxing and exotic stay and has all the cards in hand to be elected the favourite destination of the whole family.

Saint-Marcouf, also called Saint-Marcouf-de-l'Isle, is without doubt one of the most important stops for any holidaymaker wishing to visit the famous "D-Day landing beaches". A quiet village on the surface, it is home to a beautiful heritage that you can discover during your walks or bike rides, according to your desires. To see? The 13th century church of Saint-Marcouf, registered on the list of Historic Monuments; if it is worth the detour for its decorations, including a 17th century painting, it is above all its absolutely magnificent Romanesque crypt which has impressed visitors for centuries. The 19th century Notre-Dame de Bonsecours chapel, the 13th century Saint-Marcouf fountain with its healing virtues, but also the remains of the 18th century Château de Fontanay are worth a visit. The latter, although bombed in 1944, still deserves to be visited for its superb setting and its well-kept gardens, designed by André Le Nôtre, who also designed the gardens of Versailles, Chantilly and Vaux-le-Vicomte among others.

But, if there is indeed an essential site for any visit to Saint-Marcouf, it is the German Battery of Crisbecq. An emblematic place from where the very first cannon shot was fired at dawn on 6 June 1944, this battery, a real little village, has 22 underground blockhouses fitted out as in the Second World War, with its rooms, kitchens, anti-aircraft command post, infirmary, and its famous guns that you can discover during your visit. To plunge into the heart of the D-Day landings! Moreover, in June, July and August, animations, night shows, pyrotechnic demonstrations and other sound and light shows are organized, to discover the places in a playful and spectacular way.

The other asset of Saint-Marcouf is its beach. In the north of the town, the Plage des Gougins beach is perfect for family bathing breaks and lazing in the sun. Well exposed, it offers beautiful panoramas of the Saint-Marcouf Islands just opposite. One, the Île de Terre, is a wonderful bird sanctuary that is not open to visitors, while the other, the Île du Large, is a real nugget. Known as the home of a military fort from the Napoleonic era, it is also closed to visitors but you can still get close to it during sea trips from neighbouring towns such as Grandcamp-Maisy. Utah Beach and its Landing Museum, the Airborne Museum of Sainte-Mère-Église, but also Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, the Pointe du Hoc and Omaha Beach are all exciting historical sites that you may have the chance to visit during your stay in Saint-Marcouf and on the Landing Beaches!
