How can we not succumb to the charms of Guéthary? With its typical houses on the Basque coast painted in white and red (Basque and neo-Basque art deco), and its breathtaking coastline, Guéthary has enough to turn many heads. A former fishing village renowned for whaling in the 13th and 14th centuries, Guéthary was one of the first villages on the Basque coast to welcome sea bathing pioneers in the early 1900s. Later, this seaside resort with its atypical charm became the eldorado of surfers in the 1960s. Even today, Guéthary is a sure bet for anyone looking for good spots to face the most beautiful waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Rather wild, the resort's coastline alternates with splendid protected areas, particularly suitable for water sports activities. From the beaches of the centre to the port of Guéthary, not to mention the superb beach of Les Alcyons, you can jet-ski, paddle, surf, windsurf, scuba dive or take advantage of the Basque sun to recharge your batteries with vitamin D. On the surf side, fans of big waves will head for Avalanche, Cenitz or Parlementia, three spots that are renowned among fans of the discipline. At low tide, these beaches reveal a space classified by the Conservatoire du Littoral as absolutely splendid, ideal for a peaceful stroll at sunset.

Open to the ocean, Guéthary has many coastal paths, which will allow you to discover the splendours of its coast. From Guéthary to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, 7 kilometres of marked itineraries will offer you magnificent panoramas, on the beaches, the coves, the Pyrenees chain, to finish this journey on the Pointe de Sainte-Barbe, which dominates the whole bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. The most courageous walkers will attack the 54-kilometre Coastal Trail, which connects Bidart to the beautiful beaches of San Sebastian (Spain). A place not to be missed for incomparable views of all the beaches of Guéthary? Without hesitation, the former Semaphore: standing above the beach of Parlementia, it was once used for whale watching in the bay. Standing facing the ocean, it offers its visitors unparalleled views of the blue ocean, in which you will dream of diving for a refreshing swim. To make sure you don't miss anything about Guéthary, a guided tour of the city takes place every Tuesday during the summer: you will discover the history of the village from the Middle Ages to the present day thanks to the fishermen's houses in the Haispoure district, without forgetting the town hall and its neo-Basque style pediment, the beating heart of Guéthary where visitors and regulars gather all year round for a Basque ball, shows and traditional festivals.
