Close to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, situated on one of the oldest roads in Europe, Uhart-Cize is one of those small villages that are absolutely typical of the Basque Country. Marked architecture, culture and traditions make it a holiday destination that lovers of authenticity and calm will love.

Watered by the river Nive and shaped by its many tributaries, Uhart-Cize is the perfect holiday resort if you like peace and quiet. The town has all the features of those small villages in the Basque Country that we all have in mind: distinctive architecture, stocky and welcoming houses, old renovated farmhouses painted white and decorated with thick granite stones, houses dressed in wooden shingles coloured red or green... Everything, absolutely everything, for a total immersion in the warm atmosphere of the Basque Country. A few sites are worth a visit, such as the current town hall; a former presbytery, it was built in 1618 and is also marked by the recognisable features of the local architecture. Discover the former 18th century Dujakena college, the magnificent villa Harriet built in the 1930s in a neobasque style, but also the old castle, and the Gothic church Saint-Martin, partly destroyed during the religious wars except for its choir and its magnificent ornate portal.

Located on the road to Santiago de Compostela and on the old Roman road linking Bordeaux to Astorga (in Galicia), Uhart-Cize is a huge open-air playground for all nature and outdoor lovers. Here, nature is generous and abundant, and the valleys surrounding the town are particularly suitable for hiking. During your walks, you will be able to discover a "gaztelu zahar" perched at an altitude of 343 metres, an ancient protohistoric stronghold which was once used to watch over the Pays de Cize.

On foot, by car or by bike, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is a must to see: located 1 kilometre from the town centre of Uhart-Cize, the fortified town of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is also a stop on the road to Santiago de Compostela. Delighting lovers of beautiful stones and gastronomy, it offers a multitude of magnificent panoramas made up of superb Basque houses along the river and charming bridges over the Nive, with the mountains as a backdrop. Its markets are a must see: you can shop there for delicious cheeses from local production, hams and local wines, but also ciders, small dishes made with Espelette chilli pepper and honey, jams, cold meats, donkey milk cosmetics, handcrafted jewellery, paintings and pottery... Enough to bring home suitcases full of gifts for the whole family! Finally, as the beaches of Saint-Jean-de-Luz are located 1 hour's drive from Uhart-Cize, you can go there to enjoy long sandy beaches perfect for swimming, sunbathing, surfing and windsurfing!
