In the heart of the Argens valley, famous for its sumptuous and preserved landscapes, Vidauban is located at the foot of the Massif des Maures, a true paradise for hikers and lovers of green holidays. 25 kilometres from the beaches of the Mediterranean and only 100 kilometres from the first ski resorts in the Southern Alps, Vidauban can be visited in winter and summer, with family or friends.
Typical village of Provence, Vidauban is both authentic and relaxing. Dominated by the Sainte-Brigitte chapel on its high rocky peak at 180 metres, Vidauban thrives in the heart of the Argens valley. Surrounded by a generous nature, the town offers many faces, which you can discover as you stroll around. To the north, it is the umbrella pines, pink sandstone and heather that dot the landscape, while to the south, the commune is cradled by the fragrant scents of Aleppo pines, holm oaks, bordered by the cliffs of the Argens gorges. Its city centre undeniably invites you to stroll along its plane trees, pretty squares and fountains. On Sundays, from Piazza Giordano to Rue de la Victoire, via Rue Victor Hugo and Rue Garibaldi, there is the large Vidauban market: in all, there are more than 100 stalls offering fresh fruit and vegetables, but also meat, seafood and local handicrafts in the heart of the city, for the delight of young and old alike. You will have the opportunity to taste a piece of fougasse or an oil pump, a little garlic, Provençal quails, stewed beef, olives, chestnuts, Provençal honey or even wines from local varieties with an AOC or "Vins de Pays" appellation. If you love wine, you are definitely in the right place since Vidauban is renowned for its many enchanting estates, such as Château d'Astros, a flagship site for wine tourism. We strongly advise you to visit it even if you are not a wine fan, just the new castle itself is worth a visit: this magnificent Italian-style building has dominated the wine-growing plains of the estate for 150 years, just like the Old Castle, also on the estate, built during the Templar period.
Many routes cross Vidauban and its surroundings. If there is one way to go at all costs, it is the one that climbs to the Saint-Brigitte chapel: from the top of the town, to the sound of the cicadas, you can contemplate a dazzling panorama over the entire Moorish plain. The latter is rich in a multitude of paths, such as the 4 circuits of the Rouquan woods in particular, which will allow you on long routes of 2 to 5 kilometres to discover the local fauna and flora in the middle of wild orchids and mimosa. Watered by the Argens River and the Aille, Vidauban is the land of white water activities. The shaded shores of the Argens are the perfect place for hiking in the coolness of the river: it is also the perfect place to picnic and cool off on the hot summer days, so common in the region. As you venture towards the Aille River, south of the town, you will have the opportunity to discover its magnificent waterfall coiled in a bucolic setting and its décor made of rocks, ruins and large pink sandstone slabs on which it is not uncommon to encounter frogs.
But the rivers crossing Vidauban are not only a paradise for kingfishers, frogs and turtles, they also delight water sports enthusiasts. From the "Provence Aventure Vidauban" watersports base in particular, you can safely enjoy a wide range of activities: adventure trails, canoeing, paddle on the Argens River, canyoning and white-water sports will delight thrill-seekers. Not being located a few kilometers from the Gorges du Verdon, it will also be possible for you to do rafting, hydrospeed, scuba diving, paragliding and bike rides along sublime rivers.
