Between Avignon and L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, in the heart of a region where culture, heritage and gastronomy delight visitors, Le Thor has enough to fill the eyes of holidaymakers looking for authentic stays.

"On the bridge of the Thor, I sometimes felt the green and fleeting taste of an undeserved happiness: heaven and earth were reconciled"... at least that is what Le Thor evoked to Albert Camus. In the heart of the Vaucluse, in the very beautiful Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur region, Le Thor is located about twenty kilometres from the city of Avignon. Nestled in the hollow of the arms of the Sorgue which waters it from one end to the other, Le Thor has a strong historical heritage as well as a particularly well preserved nature, which seduces more and more visitors every year. To discover the most beautiful faces of this village, there is nothing better than a short walk along the alleys of its old town centre. On the list of monuments to visit, Notre-Dame-du-Lac church certainly occupies the first position: built during the 12th century, this masterpiece of Provençal Romanesque art is in line with the magnificent churches of the Sorgues sector. With its curved gothic warheads, lantern belfry, lauze roof and beautiful ornaments, it has attracted poets, painters and writers (like Albert Camus) for many centuries. Walk through the streets of the city to discover the rue de la République and its emblematic Belfry of the Thor, built above the Douzabas Gate: surmounted by a high wrought-iron bell tower, and equipped with a platform with machicolations, this gate is one of the oldest witnesses of the history of the Thor. Go through the rue Cavalerie, the rue de la Nassion, the convent of the Dominicans, the rue de Verdelin and its genoises, discover also the splendid Roue de la Garancine, the very narrow rue des Muets and the impasse des roses for a good overview of the town. From shaded alleys to wooded squares, you will discover superb monuments such as the Hôtel des Consuls, or the Château de Courtet (13th century). Another castle is worth a visit: Thouzon. Built in the 11th century, this former fortified monastery dominates the entire castrum and plain of the Comtat Venaissin. If it is not visited, it is worth a visit for the splendour of its architecture and the panoramas it allows to embrace.

Nature par excellence, Le Thor will offer you the chance to explore its surroundings with a lot of marked trails, river walks and other cycling routes, along the Sorgue river or along its meanders. You will pass through the surrounding vineyards, the hamlet of Les Vignères, but also Saint-Saturnin, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Châteaurenard or Avignon. It is impossible not to visit the one called the City of the Popes! With its famous Bridge, on which we all dance in circles, its Palais des Papes and its splendid gardens, its banks of the Rhône, its museums, its Tour Saint-Jean and its paved squares where it is a pleasure to have a drink, Avignon will certainly be a must on your journey. Finally, during your travels, the Thouzon Caves are not to be missed: the main cave, nicknamed the "Fairy Cave", will plunge you into the heart of history thanks to its stalactites, stalagmites, caves and magnificent draperies over 60 million years old.
