A veritable open-air museum, Vaison-la-Romaine has, as its name suggests, an immense Roman heritage. Renowned throughout the hexagon and even more so for its ancient remains, this charming city is one of the richest of what was once called "Gaul narbonnaise". The entrance to Vaison-la-Romaine is via a splendid Roman bridge, more than 2000 years old: that's to say if he has seen any, visitors treading its cobblestones! Linking the lower town to the upper town, the one which for many years was the only one to link the two banks of the Ouvèze offers from its arches beautiful panoramas of the river that waters Vaison-la-Romaine.

To discover all the most beautiful faces of this extraordinary city, wear a cap and good sneakers: you'll be going for miles! Under the beautiful Provençal sunshine of the Ventoux region, the cathedral Notre-Dame de Nazareth is worth seeing: with its cloister, it is one of the most beautiful Romanesque Provençal style buildings you will find in the city. Built during the 11th and 12th centuries, these splendid sites are a must to see during your trip. Not far away, the Saint-Quennin chapel and its antique decorations are worth seeing, as is the Théo Desplans archaeological museum, renowned for its sublime collections and white marble statues. For an ever-greater immersion in history, head for the ancient sites of La Villasse and Puymin: the present day remains of what was once a village organised into residential districts and commercial arteries, they also have a huge theatre (on the Puymin side), thermal baths and porticoed sanctuaries, which will plunge you into the heart of life in Roman times. A 15-hectare site that proves to be an unmissable family event! After visiting the lower town, head for the upper town: a mixture of medieval and modern, it is protected by a large 14th century fortified wall. Its fortified gate, its Belfry Tower and its winding lanes give it an incredible charm: take the time to lose yourself in its narrow streets and discover the freshness of its old enchanting fountains and the elaborate facades of its bourgeois houses. The church is open to visitors, as is the 12th century castle of the Comtal, which, in addition to being a beautiful piece of architecture, offers you an unobstructed view of the Provencal vegetation, the Mont Ventoux and the Roman town below, from its rock overlooking the town. Romantic at heart? Don't wait, and set your sights on the "Garden of the 9 Young Ladies"; this installation, both poetic and philosophical, features 81 sculpted granite blocks in which the poems of authors from all over the world are engraved.

Here, the hills with abundant vegetation shape the landscape, offering sportsmen and lovers of outdoor activities a huge open-air playground to suit all your desires. Bicycle or mountain bike fans? Hiking enthusiasts? Then you've come to the right place. Vaison-la-Romaine has a wide network of marked trails, such as the "Tour de la Colline du Serre Long" (7.3 kilometres), the "Sentier des Baumettes" (6 kilometres), the "Sentier des Géants" (15.5 kilometres), or those around the Colline de Mars (6.5 kilometres). Tree climbing, flying over the region by paragliding, but also via ferrata, climbing, hiking through the Mont Ventou, swimming in the pool and water activities in the Ouvèze will complete your stay and your discovery of this beautiful corner of Provence.
